VISTA: What software won't run inder it?:: hey i was xp pro and i intalled Vista ulimate i love it and i wont return to On lower ended computers i have shut down many of the un-needed services as http://www.pcuser.com.au/pcuser/hs2.nsf/lookup+1/6092630819B2BD6FCA2572C00001EF9EHOME | XP PRO wont start or shut down.
In start up it gets as far as the load progress bar. That zips across the screen then goes blank Just before it gets to the windows logo. I have to switch off manually. When i do i get a blue screen that says hardware failure, contact your hardware manufacturer.
The question which hardware is causing this?
At shutdown it saves settings, logs off then when the windows is shutting down message appears it just freezes and i have to switch it off at the switch at the rear of the PC. win98se on xp-pro, in Virtual PC:: parallels will not load the floppy disk or even an xp pro cd to create a vm. it could be a cooling problem. most new motherboards will kick themselves off after they reach a certain temperature, but if all your fans are turning fine that probably isn't your problem. dfg ShutDown XP - This program is a professional shutdown :: Vista Start Menu offers many RSHUT PRO RSHUT PRO is a system shutdown utility for Windows (95/98/2000/NT4/Me/XP and 2000/2003 Server) that allows http://www.ab-archive.com/programs/tools/start_shutdown_and_reboot_utilities/dfg_shutdown_xp.htmlHOME | Re: xp will not shut down unless zass shut down first - General :: Dec 21, 2008 it did not solve my shut down issue. my computer still hangs on shut down is this Windows XP Pro 32-Bit with a 64-Bit CPU? or WinXP Pro http://forums.zonelabs.com/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=gen&message.id=54335HOME |
if it's not your hdd or cd-rom, the next step is to usually pull out all your unneeded cards (like your modem for example, but not your video card obviously) and eliminate those from the picture. if that doesn't help (i doubt it will) the only things left are power supply, RAM, processor, and motherboard. if you had a computer shop stocked with parts handy it would be really easy to see what your problem is (just keep plugging things in until they work), but that's a little more difficult to do at home.

it could be bad ram, make sure it is seatly properly, do you smell a bitter burning smell? (faint or strong)
you could have a flakey hdd? just a guess really, but i don't think it's your video card or motherboard really (if you were able to get that far).
when your computer is booting up keep hitting F8 until the boot menu pops up (hopefully)...then try to boot into safe mode. if you can't boot into safe mode, i don't know what to tell you really...

Thanks teet.
I've eliminated cdrom and hd (changed them both, no diff).
Do you think maybe a cooling problem? An old pc i had used to shut down with almost the same message, that time the cooling fan wasn't working, but these fans are.. Just a thought.
