xdrive style file sharing on a linux server

Published by: jane 2009-01-08

  • I am looking for open-source software that will allow me to offer services similar to xdrive from a linux server. The software should be actively maintained and have at least an active forum to go to for support. I am willing to buy a support contract from a company who develops it, but I require that it be open source so I can modify it to use the same users table as other software on the server. To let you know what I found on my own, phpfileexchange looks like it would do the job but is not actively supported. Xythos would certainly do the job, but it is not open source.

  • Hello Nonac, There are a few alternatives that you can consider - but I am not quite sure what you are looking for. I can't tell the kind of solutions you would accept or not so I am providing a wide range as suggestions and the answer can go into more detail on the solutions you consider acceptable. [1] Use phpfileexchange. Yes, a check of the change file shows no updates in a year, but the company that provides it does offer to do updates for a fee. http://www.seattleserver.com/httpfs.htm If this does what you want, this would be an alternative. [2] Use Konqueror (with KDE) or Nautilus (with Gnome) to access an ftp server. I use Konqueror on a regular basis and it works quite well (both with and without passwords). You can access files on remote servers almost as easily as with your local hard disk. [3] Use a commercial service such as http://www.intranets.com/ which includes browser accessible collaboration software and services. [4] Use a content management system (designed for web sites). Many include a browser interface along with access control and may be adaptable for your use. [5] Use a version control system such as CVS. I use CVS almost daily with a group of over a hundred developers and it works well. There are also nice GUI interfaces for CVS available and in addition to multiple versions, you can have the access controls you may need. Please let me know the range of solutions you are interested in so I can prepare a proper answer. --Maniac

  • The primary thing I'm looking for is the ability to offer file sharing to small to medium sized groups of users (2-20) through a web interface. This has to be hosted on my server, so a third-party service like intranets.com is out. I believe Konqueror and Nautilus are clients, so that isn't what I'm looking for. I am opened to using a content management system for this. I originally wanted to find a PostNuke module to do this, but I couldn't find one. I am not tied to PostNuke, so another content management system that offers web-based file sharing is acceptable. I have used CVS some myself, and I don't think it will work for my intended audience which is church office workers sharing miscellaneous office files. They don't tend to be interested in version control features, and the check-in/check-out processes may confuse them. One thing you didn't mention in your request for clarification is groupware. That may be acceptable for this solution as well, but my limited groupware research didn't turn up anything that will work. The line between group ware and content management systems is kind of blurry, but I thought I'd throw this possibility in anyway. As for phpfileexchange itself, I am a shying away from it because there is so little documentation available on it. I know I could pay SeatleServer for support on it, but from there web site it looks like phpfileexchange is sort of an abandoned side project for them. If they aren't actively maintaining it and they don't have any other support contracts for it, then I doubt that there paid support will be able to offer quick resolutions to problems.

  • Hello nonac, This is not open source, however, it comes very close. (thus the request for clarification) Would something like this interest you : Invision File Manager http://www.invisionfilemanager.com "This license options allows you to download and use Invision Power File Manager with no restrictions. You are also granted the right to remove all the and messages the software outputs on your pages with this license. " According to the site you may also - -customise the software's design and operation to suit internal needs -create applications which interface with the operation of the Software http://www.invisionfilemanager.com/?license Let me know if this meet your needs. Thanks for the clarification - SgtCory

  • Those license terms are acceptable, and from a brief look at the web site, the software looks like the sort of thing I'm looking for.

  • Great! This software is probably the best in it's category. Does this answer your question complete enough to be closed, or do you have further concerns that relate to your original request? Thanks for the clarification - SgtCory

  • You have answered my original question, but I have one more now. If I close the question at this point without an actual answer being posted, will you get paid? I'll hold off on closing the question until you either post something as an answer or let me know that it is okay to close the question in an unanswered status.

  • Hello nonac, You can do whatever you like. If you close the question now, we (Google Answers and I) do not get paid. If I post the program I found as an answer, then I will receive a portion of the question posting fee for finding a suitable program. Either way is legal and fair. The best way to decide is to ask yourself if you have received your $10 worth. While the money is always nice, it's better in my eyes that the clients (you) feel they get the answer needed. We normally do not post answers in the clarification area. Once in while it's almost impossible not to. I have found myself often answering questions in clarification rounds where I offer ideas that may not fit the original question. Please do let me know either way and thanks for the great questions! SgtCory

  • Please do post this in the answers section. You have answered my question already and it's only fair that you get credit for your work.

  • Hello nonac, Sounds fair to me, and thanks for letting me assist you. Here is the program I mentioned above : Invision File Manager http://www.invisionfilemanager.com In addition, you may want to look at some other porgrams that fall into a similar catagory and can probably be modified for your use : PHP File Management scripts http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/File_Manipulation/File_Management/index.html While most of the above are FTP type programs, many are Open Source GPL, so you can modify them to suit your needs. I didn't list them each individually as there are far too many ;-) I hope this helps, and please do not hesitate to ask for clarification should you need it!
