ok 2 of my friends were talking about wow and i never played it before so i asked them about it and they got into it like i have been playing for years. anyway one of my friends is on the alliance and one is on the hoard. they both agreed that if i went on their server and on their side they would power level me to 70. the thing is can you make multiple characters on different sides and different servers? and if so help out with this.
My friend on the hoard wants me to be a shadow priest. what would be the best race to do this? Shadow priest looks like fun(i think)
my friend on alliance wants me to be a night elf, dont get me wronge night elfs look sweet but i don't know what class to be?

You can make a character of two factions on a pve server, but if the server is pvp then you cannot.
Shadow Priest, now with the new patch i don't think it really matters. Undead no longer has devouring plague to themselves, but still have the best racials, so go with undead.
Night Elf Druid most definitely, druid's can do anything. They're so overpowered and ridiculously easy to play.
If you go night elf, don't choose a hunter, maybe druid. If you go horde, choose either a undead or blood elf shadow priest.
Once you pick Hoard or Alliance all of your characters will be on that side. And just for the record I definitely think you should join Hoard. Not just because me and all my friends are but just because the Hoard side is way more impressive =)
First off i should tell you, that in order to play the game without feeling extremely left out, you will have to buy the game itself, the first expansion pack, and the second one when it comes out in a month. I think both expansions are $40 each, the game is $20, and subscription is $15 a month. Subscription of course is the only thing that is not one time only. grand total of $115 the first month and $15 every month after that. oh and you can buy it all online without ever owning a physical copy of it or having to go to a store.
the rules for character creation are simple:
10 characters per server
no mixing different sides on the same pvp server, but you can do that on other types of servers.
3 basic types of servers:
pvp (player vs. player; just means you can attack any1 of the opposite side at any time you want, and vise versa)
regular (same as pvp, but without the rule mentioned above.)
rp ( same as regular in every way except your supposed to pretend like you are your character, but then again no one EVER does that. =( )
There is a difference psychologically between horde and alliance btw (at least on my server). The typical person who joins the alliance is usually uptight, doesn't like sharing anything ever, keeps to themselves, and is overall unhelpful. Now this could possibly, depending on your personality, make you a better player, or you could join the horde, which is the exact opposite.
On the subject of what race and class you should use, that really depends on YOUR personality and what you think would be cool to do for combat in-game. But if you really don't care what you become, follow these instructions to figure out the most useful one:
Alliance:
1. Make a human of any class
2. Use arrow keys to move
3. Run west to goldshire
4. From goldshire, run north-west to stormwind
5. press enter once your within the city, that brings up a chat box.
6. in the chat box, type /2 (don't press enter after that though until you type the rest of the message)
7. That brings up a chat channel that allows you to display a message on the screen of anyone within the bounds of a city on the alliance.
8. from there, just ask around about what class and race are most needed on that server in raids and instances.
Horde:
1. Make a troll or orc of any class
2. Use arrow keys to move
3. Run east until you find the main road of durotar
4. From the main road, run north all the way to orgrimmar.
5. press enter once your within the city, that brings up a chat box.
6. in the chat box, type /2 (don't press enter after that though until you type the rest of the message)
7. That brings up a chat channel that allows you to display a message on the screen of anyone within the bounds of a city on the alliance.
8. from there, just ask around about what class and race are most needed on that server in raids and instances.
And one more thing, it may just come down to which of your friends has more stuff in wow for you to mooch off. just use all that i have told you to figure everything out.
I have a few level 70's and I am mostly Alliance. Try out the different Night Elf classes and see what you like. Druid can tank, heal do damage, stealth and nuke, so they can do it all.
If your gonna be a shadow priest, be undead, just coz they suit each other sooo well.
But decisions between horde and alliance are mostly to do with which you think looks best because there is no point spending loads of time on a character you don't like the look of.
Hope that helped =]
If you are on two different servers, you can play horde on one and alliance on the other, even if they are pvp.
I would try them both and see which is more fun. Hurry now because a new patch came out yesterday that precedes the next level. Then your friends will be busy leveling to 80.
