11 years later it is still hard to choose.
We had a super fun wedding and reception with all of our friends and family. Some have passed away now so it was a special day and we are glad to have it on video. I love my ring and can't imagine not having one at all.

to answer your question without interruptions.. i'd have the wedding and take plenty of photos to reminisce in the future of my special day and even pass along to my kids for keepsake...

Court house or small church wedding, no big reception, no diamond and a down payment on a house. I had the court house wedding, no diamond and we bought a house 19 years ago. Now I have my mother's diamonds, she was married 3xs, each time got a big rock and I never wear any of them.
I got both a nice diamond ring and a nice wedding - worked out perfectly!
Honestly, neither of them mean that much to me but I'm not a very materialistic person. I'd be fine with a plain band and a courthouse wedding.

I don't think I want a diamond ring anyway.. they're too showy and materialistic. I would rather a ring with something more unique and not as pricey! i.e. a pretty stone. For me, not for anyone else to show off to. Or no engagement ring at all.
At this time in my life I would rather have a medium diamond ring. I would like an opal and diamond. Diamonds are beautiful and I don't mind splurging on one but not a hand that has one on every finger. I don't like expensive fancy weddings. I like to see simple thrifty weddings for others. A wedding dress can be cheap and still be prettier than a very expensive one. I am not interested in weddings though.
