Hi I was wondering what do guys do in the winter for construction? Do they get fired right when winter comes and their on their own to find another job? or does it work a different way? Also I'm wondering if you could work construction your whole life, I hear of guys doing it until their in their 70's but does your body break down so bad it hurts to get up every morning and go to work? Or do guys move up to another position not requiring much physical effort? Although I love construction, I wouldn't want to hurt every day. Complex question with a not so simple answer either.
As far as what happens in winter,,, that really depends on quite a few things,,,
1) the type of construction you are engaged in ( residential, commercial, fit outs, remodels )
2) the type of projects the estimators are bring in ( long term or short term
3) the area you are working in ( mild vs. severe winter conditions )
4) the attitude of your employer ( hire heavy in warm months and lay off in colder ones )
I am 55, I have been in construction of varying types for 38 years. Yes, your body gets abused and you develop aches and pains that you live with.
In my case I have managed to earn a spot as a field superintendent for a well known and respected non union general contractor. One that lays off only as a last resort and in the past 10 years I have only been laid off ( with 50% pay and benefits ) for a few months. The physical efforts required on my part I get to pick and choose,,, if I want to hang restroom partitions, then that is what I do rather than sub it out,,, if I want to hang doors and install hardware,,, then that, again, is my choice. Winter construction, particularly outdoor work, generally is more difficult, less efficient, harder on equipment, http://books.google.com/books?id=40jvHuX6MxAC&pg=PT56&lpg=PT56&dq=Working+construction+and+the+winter?&source=web&ots=9e-CVRxonX&sig=OkadWrfPMWZNbS_SaALH12JIaVk&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=49&ct=resultHOME |
Then too, there are days when all I do is run a piece of equipment, or settle disputes, or do nothing but paperwork all day long for 10 hours.
Depends on where you live. Right now building is dead, and i cold climate it slows in the winter terribly anyway. As far as the wear and tear-- I am 31, been doing this 10 years solid. My body is probably about 50. Hands like 65. Most guys that do this into late age start doing the light end. Finish work, bidding, GC, that kind of thing.
