Not a EURO title since the 60's? Can anyone give some insight as to why we are soo poor in EURO?

I know the tournament has only been around for 40 odd years but still..

lets be honest, even the world cup history is pretty poor...1 world cup in 70 years is not that much

Forgetting the history from WWII to 1970, I'd have to say the WC record isn't really that bad. 1 1st-place, 2 2nd-place, a 3rd and a 4th, only once being eliminated in the group stages and never failing to qualify. Overall record since 1970 is 28W, 14T, 8L (counting PK games as ties).

I don't know how this ranks vs other countries. I'd take a swag and say 3rd behind Germany and Brazil.

lists Italy as 4th in all-time European finals performance (behind Germany, Holland and France). I guess the bigger question is why Holland (and the USSR , in its day) do well in Europe but not the World Cup.

I will go for Argentina as third best in WC since they took home two WC's and one other Final appearance.

For Europe, Holland basically won one championship, but did nothing much in most other European Finals. Consider that great Dutch squad of the 1970's only managed to finish 3rd once and even failed to make it out of qualifying stage in 1972. That 1988 title was the X-factor. Their ranking ran up.

I guessed the former Soviet Union was great(ranking 5th on the RSSSF) because the old format was based on home-&-away. May be that helped them. They got very far in the pre-1980's tournament while they had one great run in the 1988 tournament after that.
