Why is my father acting different?? Alzheimers?

Published by: jane 2009-01-07
  • My father has not been himself in the past couple of years. Ex. I have 2 kids, when I take one child out of the car, instead of helping me by taking another, he walks straight into the house. He's inconsiderate, doesn't think to help out unless you specifically tell him. Also, he's so loving but at the same time doesn't care about anything. His exact words were "I gave up". We've spoken to drs and they don't know, has anyone you know gone through a personality change like this?

  • depending on age it may be possible if he's forgetful like does'nt know people he should or keeps reverting bck to yester yrs could be the starting of it or if lifes been hard for him maybe he has just givin early stages of alzhiemers sometimes hard to diagnose goodluck

  • You don't say how old your dad is or tell us anything about his general health. A change of personality can happen because of a life threatening event (heart attack), medications, or even mental problems like depression. There are tests for cognizance that can be done. He needs a full medical work up and a doctor that does more than say "I don't know". You may need to make that appointment for him so be sure to go to a geriatric specialist if he is old enough to be called geriatric. If not, be sure to talk to his doctor about your concerns prior to his appointment, even if you have to make an appointment for yourself to do so. Remember, the law will not allow his doctor to relay any information about him without his permission so it is up to you to make sure his doctor has all the facts. Good luck.
