i personally think it's because they do not want to get involved and causing themselves troubles. but they actually interested in knowing what happen to you. true friends shouldn't behave like this, they should be able to stand by you through the hardest time, that's what friends are for. =)
Sometimes it's because the person wants to help but does not want to 'intrude' or make the person with the problem feel like they have to talk if they don't want to.
The question asked here is generalized.
So, without knowing the specifics and the people/situation involved I wouldn't assume that it's because of gossip.
It is not always negative reasons as to why a person might ask another before the one having the difficult time. Sometimes it's out of consideration.....
I think sometimes it's so that they don't put their foot in it and maybe if they ask you they think you'll get upset.
