| Why is "Frontwards" not an acceptable word? | | Published by: webmaster 2009-01-08 |
| With words being accepted like "ginormous" I think it is time to move frontwards on this issue.
Backward implies direction - you're moving back. It isn't talking about the physical back of an object. For example, the picture fell over backward.
Forward also implies direction - you're moving ahead. You're moving toward something.
"Front" refers to the physical front of an object. It's the "something" you're moving toward. You can move toward the front of a crowd... you can move toward the front of the line... but you can't move frontward.
Who says it's not accepted? It's in the Oxford American Dictionary.
"Forward" is a perfectly good word. What's the difference between the two, other than "Frontwards" is more awkward to say?
If you've ever put your shirt on inside-out, you KNOW the opposite of backwards IS frontwards.
