I think personlly that all american citizens under the age of 18 should have the same rights ie voting however as we don't why do the american youth not organize our own civil rights movement? I also don't want answers like kids are to dumb to vote or things like that as many of us are educated and would like to take part in the electorial process
Under 18, you are the responsibility of your parents and they vote on your behalf. Those under age have not developed the skills necessary to make sound decisions, although there are of course exceptions.
It was not that long ago when one needed to be 21 to vote, so you have made progress in that regard.
So you want to responsible for being irresponsible as well? As in do you want to be charged as an adult for ANY crime, do you want to be able to enter in to a Contract, do you want to have to pay off your debts? I think you should have to pay taxes or be retired to be allowed to vote myself. If you payed taxes for half or more of the period we are voting over then yeah you should be allowed to vote(with the exception of 18 or people who couldn't work long enough to qualify). It's tax dollars that fund the Govt, so it is tax payers that should be deciding who is representing us. When our lawmakers consider that the majority of people are capable of voting on issues, which direct the course of our nation, can make those intelligent decisions at a specific age...then so be it!
There are "minors" who are more intelligent and responsible than many adults I know. Yet...you have to have a set standard for the majority.
Until our lawmakers change those "rules," along with drinking, driving, emancipation, and other age related issues....it will most likely not change.
Look at the issue in the news today with two very intelligent individuals running for President. One must get past the "smoke and mirror" acts by the politicians to make a credible decision as to which person is best fitted for the position. Both current parties have serious issues to confront and whether the candidate is the first black President or the first female Vice President for historical gain...should not be considered!!
We tend to blame the person sitting in the Oval Office for our Country's woes yet we need to look towards Congress where our real issues lay.
When you have a majority of one party overriding the ideas of an opposing party President...you wind up with "lame duck" politics.
We turn to the "blame game" of which party is responsible for our problems. We need to get away from "politics" and return to responsible government!
With that in mind....I'd rather see the voting age based upon informed intelligence rather than age!
It's because every right has an equal responsibility and many kids can't take on those responsibilities yet.
Like you said: voting. As an adult it's my right. However, I have a responsibility to do the research and make a good decision.
It's assumed that since I'm an adult I can take on that responsibility. If I commit a felony they'll take that right away.. However, kids can't vote because they're viewed to not have the experience necessary to make an informed decision yet.
Good question though.
