Why does my baby want to stay latched on constantly?

Published by: webmaster 2010-03-10

  • i have a six week old who is probably going thru a growth spurt but he will nurse for 30 min on one side then 30 on the other. Then, after a full hour, when I take him off, assuming hes done, he will scream and cry and keeps making sucking gestures with his mouth. so, iI put him back on because i dont want to leave him hungry. He will keep doing this constantly. He drains both breasts but wont be content unless he is latched on. One day I nursed him for over two hours and when I set him down he screamed and sucked his tounge, my husband looked at me and said "he's hungry""I've tried pacifiers he spits them out after a few min. Is there anything I can do? He has done this since birth and I know he is getting enough b/c he constantly has w/d diapers.

  • It's very comforting to be latched onto Mom :) But meanwhile Mom can't get anything else done! Maybe you should try a sling of some sort so he can do his thing and you can do yours.

  • That is what I call a Boobie baby. I am going to be so sad when my Boobie baby dosent need me like that any more:( He just loves you and your boobs! It really does suck when you cant seem to get a thing done... but I bet he is happy. Times will change and it wont be long. It is totally normal. My baby dosent starve either, she is 24 lbs @ 8 months. They eat when they need it. Sometimes more than others. If it really bothers you just put him in the stroller and go for a walk, see if that fends him off for a bit.

  • You should def ask your pediatrician but sometimes, some women don't make enough milk to keep up with there babies appetites and are forced to supplement with formula. Some women also pump between feedings to increase there milk supply but it doesn't seem like you get much time for that. I don't know about you but I don't think I could nurse for that long. You may just have to find a different way to soothe the baby, tried using your fingers instead of a pacifier? I forget the amount I believe it's 7-8 wets and 1-2 bowel movements a day, if he's doing that I would talk to the ped and see if they have some better solutions.

  • omg, i thought I was the only one. my 6 week old daughter is the same, she's stuck to my boob right now, suckling away. I don't get time to pump because of this, n because 2 hrs later she's still sucking, there's no more milk to fill her upso have to supplement a bottle when she's hungry. I enjoy the together time we have, the housework can wait.

  • i think your son might be using you as a human pacifier. my son did this too. its just a comfort thing. let him do this. he just wants to feel close to his mommy. he will grow out of it in not too long

  • Let him do it. he is regulating your milk supply and liekly havign a growth spurt. Also, babies have a need to suck, they are born with it, it comforts them and is their only way of getting nourishment. It will pass. It could last a few days, or a few weeks (as with my son). It's totally normal, don't worry, it will get better. At 6 weeks you still have some things to work out breast feeding wise. My son didn't start spacing feeding until around 9 weeks. Now he eats about every 2 to 3 hours but sometimes less. Just nurse on demand. If it's too much to handle go ahead and give a bottle of expressed milk but it's better to let the baby regulate your supply during this crucial time.
