Hi,
Canon 50mm f/1.4 is one of the best portrait lenses available. It has the classic 50mm focal length so that makes it very popular among full frame users.
It falls between the f/1.8 and f/1.2. The first one has a rather cheap built, good optical quality at an appealing price. The last one is extremely expensive given the extra options so it's a viable option only for professional photographers.
As far as the 50mm f/1.4 lens goes i can easily say it's a great lens. For a mid priced item it has very good optical quality, chromatic aberrations only in extreme cases and a very pleasing bokeh.
Because it's one of the most popular primes in Canon's lens line-up, it is used for display purposes for many of the new camera tests.
If you get the chance to get your hands on this item you won't be disappointed.
Because the 200 mm f 2 L will take the attention away from it.
And someone who can buy M III DS will most likely not get the 50 mm f 1.8.
50 mm f/1.4 lenses are impressive.
They also use a red ring to show off their "L" lenses (Nikons gold "ED" ring is harder to see)
And the white lenses show up better at sporting events than the black Nikons
At the most recent NFL game in my city, while nearly 2/3rds of the pros were using Nikons, unless you looked, all you saw were the white Canon lenses.
All in all a very good marketing strategy.
Because after shelling out all that cash, the 50mm f1.4 will be the only lens a person can buy for quite a while :)
Seriously, the reason for this lens choice is probably because a 50mm f1.4 is a simple lens, though very good in quality. It's a classic focal lenght. The lens is relatively small, and does not draw the eye away from the actual camera; like a big white 200mm f2 might, as Pooky noted.
precisely BECAUSE a 50mm lens is a Standard lens.
Perhaps because it is the most basic lens.
Canon show the 1DS mk III because it is the flagship camera and boasts 21 megapixels. As for the 50mm 1.4mm lens, that is purely for display, the camera comes body only, therefore the purchaser can please themselves as to which lens they require. The 50mm lens is considered by some to be a very useful tool, it gives the same perspective as the human eye and that is why it is classed as a standard lens. As for the other answer stating that it is the best portrait lens, I'm affraid that is totaly wrong. Lenses from 80mm-135mm are the optimum choice for portraiture unless you are using larger format camera's
