Ok, not trying to start a battle...someone asked a question today and referenced her midwife....I don't understand why anyone would want anyone to deliver their babies without a medical degree!! Unless of course it was an emergency and you were about to have it on the side of the road and a state trooper had to or something...but what if something goes wrong during birth? wonder if you need an emergency c-section? I would want a surgeon on standby!!!!
Again, I'm not trying to upset anyone!!!!!!! Just trying to understand...ok, i get the whole lovey dovey experience..but this is a baby's life at stake..why take chances because YOU will feel better???
a midwife DOES have a medical qualification (?!) its not like its just someone off the street that they take on and say, theres a bump, get baby out of there.
i chose a midwife based on my experiences with obstertritians - i tristed the midiwfes more than the OB. midiwifes deliver babys every single day, and if women hav quick labours, probably several babys a day.
I have to agree with you... its a personal choice for everyone, but with each of my babies, I wanted to be in a hospital with an actual doctor delivering my baby, that could deal with any unforseen issues immediately. I personally don't understand midwives or homebirths for that matter. I'd love to hear from anyone that has done either and if they were at all worried if something god forbid went wrong? I chose and ob because I felt a lot better knowing that if something was to happen he could get the baby out and I would not have to worry about it. People to have different views on midwifes vs. and ob. But is it up to you and how you feel about who you choose. I am glad that I had an ob because my babies cord was rapped and he helped her. Please edcuate yourself before posting something like this next time. Midwives do have medical degrees. They pay a lot of money to go to University, and deserve recognition for that.
Its a hell of a lot cheaper and its success rate is pretty high, its not like you're bringing a witch doctor or anything.
Considering that humans have been delivered without doctors for as long as we've been in existence, it's silly to think that a trained midwife could not deliver a baby. Also with this country's infant mortality rate, I'd rather go with a midwife. If there are any extraordinary problems during delivery, they will take you to a hospital. Common sense.
I recommend a midwife to my friend who was having a baby alone, no partner.
Her midwife made her feel so at ease during her pregnancy. Midwives treat you like a friend and not a patient. For my friend who didn't have the comfort with a partner at home, she found it with her midwife. She could call her in the middle of the night if she was having a problem and her midwife would come to her home if needed.
I wanted one, but couldn't :(
Although I have heard bad stories about them to. Same with doctors though, you never know what you're going to get.
i didnt get a choice. im frm UK and was jsut referred straight from my doctor to my midwife when i was 8 wks pregnant, apparantly thats what happens with antenatal appointments here!
in my hospital i have chosen to give birth they hav a midwife led unit and a consultant(doctor) led unit. they always send people into midwife led unit unless they have a c section booked for medical reasons or whatever or if your high risk...they keep you in midwife unit but oyu have the choice if you want say an epidural youll jsut be transferred up to the consultant led unit then :) midwives are very experienced at what they do and do need medical qualifications where i live :S - a doctor is only needed if for an emergency operation like a c section or something - and in my hospital if you need one then youll jsut be transferred to the doctors - but usually you only need midwives and theyre brilliant at their jobs and work with babies on a daily basis x
