Because it's a fad as all things are, as long as it's what you want, do it. I have seen a few men with them there, fair play to them. As with all fads there are people who will go against it and condemn people who follow it. I have tattoos but I don't have any "usual" designs in the "usual" places, but I know people who do and I don't care. People should live and let live, I don't get why people feel the need to impose the feeling of shame on other people for their choices. The "real", "original" tattoos in this world were almost stamped out by westerners making the natives feel shameful and guilty for tattooing themselves, something so beautiful and meaningful was almost lost by people JUDGING others for their choices. LOL @ 'tramp stamp'! That always makes me laugh! Wonder what they would call mine?! (What might 'appear' to be a lower back tattoo, upon further investigation, proves to be much more. A full waistband wrapping all the way around from middle of lower back, across hips on both sides, around to the front and dipping down to where there 'should' be pubic hair!)
Anyway, to put my 2 cents into answering your question...some people do it to cuz it's the fad, some people do it cuz they like it and it's a good place for ink if you need to hide it for work reasons, etc.
Do you think we'll ever get to the point as a society where us tattoo'd folk aren't criticized for the 'colors of our skin'? nah...who am I kidding?!!

If I was going to have one, I'd do it there because if you wanted to wear a sleevless top to a wedding or something special, a tattoo wouldn't look very nice on your arm. Lower back means you can hide it when you want and show it when you want. I think they are the best place for them.

Yeah, I'm kind of frustrated. I got a tattoo on my lower back before it started becoming "the thing." I got it there because I wanted it to be symmetrically placed and somewhere you wouldn't be able to see if I wore a tank top and shorts.
Now everyone assumes I got it because everyone else did. I've even heard it called a whore stamp, which is especially infuriating.
Well....one thing is that it also doesn't distort there if you should get pregnant, fatter, skinnier, etc. Also, it's a place where you can either show or hide you tattoo depending on the circumstance.

I have never seen a man with it on his lower back; it is hot if a man moves it up to between his shoulder blades... for a woman, it looks great if you want to show it because it's one of the only places a woman can get a large tatoo without showing it to the world when she tries to wear a tank.

its hidden, parents can't see it, and people see it as "sexy".

i hate the ones on the bottom of the back EVERYONE has it, theres nuthing unique about it. My first Tattoo was a HUGE sun/moon faces in between my shoulder blades and up my neck, looks cool
cuz thats the closest to their butts they can have a tatoo and still show it off without it being called indecent exposure
