reading the bible, mary and others were just mention in a pass,,even jesus never gave mary so much( remember when he dismissed her and his brothers and said "this are my family that do god's will")..i mean we should respect this people but not to the extent of praying through them to god....if am right, i think catholics pray to god or jesus through mary and saints,,is this right at all?

if you want to give a serious answer, pls make it very logical with bible support.

  • Catholics don't base every single thing on the bible... also you may be forgetting that all Protestant denominations stemmed from Catholicism.

  • What I really don't understand is how a Christian that needs everything they do for God to have a Biblical verse, how can any of those type of Christians justify preaching on the internet...since the Internet isn't scriptural. The Bible doesn't mention television either, how can they justify Televangelists. God never said television. This just looks like an obsession to me.

  • The Bible tells us that â œhe that approaches God must believe that he is and that he becomes the rewarder of those earnestly seeking him.â (Hebrews 11:6) Notice that this scripture says we are to â ˜approach God.â ™ As the true and living God, Jehovah wants us to pray to him, not to someone else. Prayer is part of our worship and for this reason should be directed only to the Creator, Jehovah. (Matthew 4:10) Jesus Christ taught his followers to pray to his â œFather in the heavens.â (Matthew 6:9) Jesus did not teach them to pray to himself, nor to his human mother Mary, nor to any other person. Jehovah is all-powerful, all-wise, perfect in justice and in love. So, why should we go to any lesser person? Further, the inspired apostle Paul assures us that God â œis not far off from each one of us,â if we seek him in the right way.â ”Acts 17:27.

But you may say, â œHow can we, as imperfect creatures with inherited sin, pray to a God who is perfect and righteous?â Jehovah has lovingly taken this into consideration and provided a â œhelperâ to speak for us in heaven. That helper is â œJesus Christ, a righteous one.â (1 John 2:1, 2) He gave his life as a ransom for mankind. Moreover, Jehovah has appointed him as his High Priest. Jehovah requires us to recognize the position of his Son in His purpose and to offer all our prayers in his name. That is why Jesus told his followers: â œNo one comes to the Father except through me.â (John 14:6) Jesus also said: â œIf you ask the Father for anything he will give it to you in my name.â (John 16:23) For our prayers to be acceptable to God, then, we must pray to Jehovah God through his Son, that is, in the name of Jesus.

  • remember when Jesus performed His first miracle because His mother asked Him to?

if it's not okay to pray through proxies, then the people who ask for prayers are in the wrong.

  • good question man. I've thought the same thing about catholics all my life. I never got why they did that. I'm Christian btw. thanks for askin.
    P.S sorry for the non-answer....

  • We also pray directly to God. IMHO, praying to Mary and/or the saints is like taking part in one giant cosmic prayer circle.

  • This is a common misconception among Protestants. Catholicism is closest to what Jesus taught, because it was the first Churh that St. Peter himself founded! Luke 1:46-56 will give you your answer about why Mary is special. Since she is the mother of Jesus Christ, doesn't that also make her pretty special? They don't worship her, simply hold her in high regard and she acts as an intercessor. She is able to carry prayers to God more easily because she has a very close relationship with Jesus. Same with the saints, who are especially good Christians that have contributed in great ways to Christianity throughout history. God bless.

  • Catholicism teaches us the Jesus is the One Mediator
and that In Christ the One Intercessor all members of the Body of Christ are to pray for each other, including those who who have gone before
as prayer partners for all is answered by Jesus

Romans15 ;30 join me by your prayers on my behalf
    Col4:3 1 Thess 5;25,2 Thess1:11,3:1,Eph 6:18&19 asking prayer from others

Rev5:8 angel offers the prayers of the saints to the Lord

Rev 6:9-11 the martyrs under the Altar in heaven ask for God to punish their murders and those of the ones still on earth"who will fill up the number' of those martyred

  • My grandmother is a true hart catholic and she is VERY angry with us for not being catholic. she tell us that the saints and Mary are like lawyer and they ask God to help us... What I keep telling her is why get lawyer when Jesus made the way for us to go straight to the judge...

Well she keeps getting mad so we don't tell her anymore cuz she's 91 and I don't think we're going to change her mind

  • Because they had to convert the Pagans, and couldn't just put a big red x mark over all their beliefs - they had to transform them. The role the Goddess played was taken over by Mary, albeit very diminshed and watered-down. The misc lesser gods and nature spirits became the saints.

  • Before Jesus Christ died for our sins and opened the gates of heaven there were no saints in heaven. Therefore there are no Old Testament writings that would mention them.

Very few of the new Christians died before most of the New Testament was written. Therefore there is little in the Bible about asking saints to pray for us.

However the last book of the Bible does talk about the saints in heaven praying.

Revelation 5:8: Each of the elders held a harp and gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of the holy ones.

Revelation 8:3-4: He was given a great quantity of incense to offer, along with the prayers of all the holy ones, on the gold altar that was before the throne. The smoke of the incense along with the prayers of the holy ones went up before God from the hand of the angel.

The Holy Spirit guided the early Church in many things not explained in the Bible including how does the Body of Christ (believers) living on Earth relate to the Body of Christ (saints) living in heaven. We are still one Body.

Catholics share the belief in the Communion of Saints with many other Christians, including the Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Episcopal, and Methodist Churches.

The Communion of Saints is the belief where all saints are intimately related in the Body of Christ, a family. When you die and go to heaven, you do not leave this family.

Everyone in heaven or on their way to heaven are saints, you, me, my deceased grandmother, Mary the mother of Jesus, Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II.

As part of this family, you may ask your family and friends living here on earth to pray for you. Or, you may also ask the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Andrew, or your deceased grandmother living in heaven to pray for you.

Prayer to saints in heaven is simple communication, not worship.

Asking others to pray for you whether your loved ones on Earth or your loved ones in heaven is always optional.

For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 946 and following: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt1s...

    With love in Christ.

  • well im catholic myself
and i dont pray through mary to god
    if thats what are asking
    i pray to both
    god and mary
they both did great things in life

  • The Bible - which some Christians accept as literal truth - was written via proxies. So either 1.) proxies are capable of carrying God's truth, inspiring people to goodness, etc or 2.) they are not, and the Bible is falliable. (Within Christan reasoning)

If people are following the central message of Christianity, do you care if they pray to a saint while asking for God's help?
