I'm not afraid of birds. I have always had a pet bird, of some sort. Also will pick up wild birds. Sometimes they will knock themselves out, flying up against our window. I just pick it up and hold it until it comes to it's senses and let it go. Can't remember how many times, I have done that. But I have a friend who doesn't like my bird, and doesn't visit. I have heard many people try to explain their fear of birds. Some are afraid of "having their eyes pecked out" by wild birds protecting the nest. Some don't like the thought of the mites wild birds can have. Some people are freaked out by the wing flapping, some don't like the noises, and others are afraid of being bitten. I have found that many people are afraid of the flapping noise the birds wings make and also that they may get caught in their hair or peck at their eyes.

i suppose it would depend on the type of bird..
people are afraid of things they don't understand or are not used to. I was afraid of my rats crawling on me... but in time i came to understand their behaviour and it was nothing afterwards. As with my budgies, every time they took off flying it scared the living hell out of me, but once i got used to them and learned their personality it became normal and i dont even notice when they take off flying and playing anymore... :) people just need to loosen up and keep an open mind not every animal is out to attack.
