    x^2-y^2=7 , xy=7 , x=7 , x^2+y^2=7

  • these two are functions

    xy=7 , x=7

    as there is only one unique value of the dependent variable per value of the independent variable (in the case of x=7, y would be the independent variable, in the other case, it doesn't matter which one you pick).

    These two are not functions

    x^2-y^2=7 x^2+y^2=7

    as you actually have two values of the dependent variable per value of the independent variable and this will be true no matter which variable you choose to be the independent one.

    THE ANSWER PROVIDED BY BILLRUSS DOWN THERE IS WRONG.

    This is the definition of function:

    "A function is a relation that associates a SINGLE output to EACH input element drawn from a fixed set"

    x = 7 can be considered a function if I assume that x is the dependent variable of the independent variable that I declare as t, i.e. x(t) = 7. In this case, this will show as a straight line in my defined (t,x) cartesian plane with 0 slope and fixed value x(t) = 7 for any value of t. So, I beg your pardon, but x=7 can be considered a function just as much as y = 7 can be considered a function.

    x^2-y^2=7 x^2+y^2=7

    these two are not functions. If you remember your Analytical Geometry course, the first one describes a Hyperbola in the (x,y) plane and the second one is a circle (special case of an ellipse). For these, there are multiple output values for whichever variable you declare as independent and, thus, they are not functions because an input DOES NOT produce a single output unless you specifically declare that either y or x have to be larger than zero.

  • You have 4 equations, and they can all be considered functions of x or y except x=7, which is just a definition.
