My parents used to buy everything on "layaway" when I was a kid. Are there any stores at all that do this today? lol.
I know Wal-Mart did away with their layaway program because it was taking up space in the receiving area and they were not making any real profit off of it because customers did not pay any interest or anything extra, so then they just did away with that and started pushing the credit cards because they were getting interest off that. Tons of stores have layaway, the most common one I can think of is Wal-Mart.
Layaway is actually a great way to build your credit. Unfortunately, many people today don't even know what the word means. With the economy the way it is, I have a feeling it may become popular again.
These days its just easier for people to pay for everything they can't afford on their credit cards then scream bankruptcy so they can get out of paying for it all. It's the American way, don't ya know it?
