Please help come up with some ideas, its for a history essay.
It was one of the first tests of the UN and the policy of the U.S. to stop communist aggression. There were many "cold war" scenarios where the war between the super powers was fought by proxy, but this one was far more out in the open.
In addition to the other answers, China wanted Russia to help it with its nuclear programme, and felt that by aggravating the Korean War it might escalate tension between USA and USSR. This in turn, they hoped, would encourage the USSR to ally themselves more closely with China (Mao Tse Tung secretly hoped to emerge from the conflict as the leader of a nuclear superpower - some believe he hoped the US and USSR would destroy each other leaving him supreme). The Korean war represents the coldest part of the cold war, with the superpowers fighting each other by proxy. It wasn't until Saddam Hussein and the first Gulf War that the cold war really ended when the US and Russia sided together.
if you mean the one when the States had to intervene, South Korea was fighting against Communism (the North Koreans) and it turned into a huge war that the States had to get involved with.
I really hope that helped! and good luck with the essay!
