All other reds contain the tannins though.
Hello,
Good question. I was going to pass this question by, as it s asked often on this venue. However, after reading the contribution about tannins, I figured I ought to toss my 2 cents in. Tannins have nothing to do with the health benefits of wine. By the way, the healthiest wines would be red (or dark purple-blue/near black). Tannins are great as preservatives that allow red wines to age but for health benefits, no.
A little background, if you already know this pass this paragraph by. A while ago, some bright genius with a big brain pan noticed that the French had some of the lowest rates of cardiac deaths in the world. Considering their diet, drenched in butter and cream as it is, the French ought to be leading the known universe in cardiac deaths. And yet the opposite is true. Hence came the term, French Paradox and study of same name.
The roads lead quickly to red wine. The French, obviously, drink lots of it. The Mayo Clinic has a lot of informative articles on this and I suggest you research it, if inclined. In short, though, it is suggested that the antioxidant, resveratrol, found in the skin of dark red/purple-blue/near black grapes help in lowering bad cholesterol and prevents both blood clots and damage to blood vessels. Others suggest that the polyphenols are the silver bullets that protect the heart. Lastly, some suggest it s the alcohol. Of course, the pro-red wine group would point out that the French are pretty specific in drinking red wine, not other types of alcohol. Malcolm Smith was told to drink three glasses of red wine daily :: Oct 30, 2007 Here's to a healthier heart. I think the jury is still out. I think it s partly due to the fact that it is alcohol we are talking about, after all. For all its reputed health benefits, there are real dangers here. For myself, I love wine, as does my wife. We drink it without regard to whatever health benefits its might have. Wine makes all our meals better, our conversations deeper and just enhances the quality of our lives all the way around. That it might protect our hearts is the frosting.
Lastly, some have suggested that red grape juice has the same heart benefits as its wine counterpart. Perhaps.
Hope this helps.
oak aged pinot noir as it has the highest levels of ellagitannins- i kid you not. ten points please
red
I read in a book called "Blue Zones" (about longevity) that red wine from Sardinia is probably the healthiest, because of how it's made. As for what you're likely to find locally, I've heard Pinot Noir is probably highest in whatever-it-is that makes wine healthy.
there was a article about red wine being good for your health in one of the readers digests. it has anti-oxidents and a 5 oz glass helps you sleep better at night. try googling health benefits of wine
