Nose bleeds are usually caused by the mucous membranes drying out and cracking, or trauma. Have you been using nasal sprays like Afrin/ these constrict the blood vessels and dry up the membranes. Dont pick at your nose either, this can cause trauma. First apply pressure to thesoft flares of your nose for 10 minutes holding your head back. Then I would say use a moisterizing saline spray several times a day and a humidifier at night. If it dont get better in several days, see a doctor

i agree with the ice and pinch the nostril, head slightly back thing for about 10- 15 minues...
and also what you can do is stick a cotton ball between the upper row of teeth and your lip in the front, right next to the little crease directly under your nose. that's where most of the bleeding vessels come from.
if bleeding doesn't stop within 30 minutes, go seek some medical help.
Pinch your nostrils shut and lean forward; don't lean back or you'll end up swallowing the blood which can make you sick to your stomach. Apply ice as well as the pinching if the bleeding's pretty bad. Don't let up pressure until the bleeding stops. Then leave your nose alone for a while: trying to clean out the blood can make the bleeding start again.
If you can't get the bleeding to stop within a reasonable amount of time, say a half hour, go to the emergency room.
