What is the best Procedure for Backing Up?

Published by: jack 2009-01-07
  • Okay, I know this question has been asked before - but the answers are varied and disperse. I'm looking for distinct clarification in a few areas.

First of all, to make the scenario clear - I run my own Windows 2003 Server, so I don't need Telnet or anything else. I can run everything locally on the Server itself.

So, down to the nitty gritty. :)

    1. Before backing up - what needs to be done? Should vBulletin be turned off? Should the website be completely disabled, so that not even the Board-is-Down screen gets loaded?
how can I view inside my ear?::
400000 pixel resolution (and up). My sense from browsing around a bit is that a good resolution would push the price back up, most likely above $1000.

    2. What is the best way to back up the databases, given the scenario I'm working with? MySqlDump? Or should I just copy the actual MySQL data directories?
Improving size and presence of human forearm veins::

    3. If we're talking about Mysqldump, should any options be specified? (i.e. "--opt", "--lock-tables", etc...) Or should any command be performed first?

    4. Is there any special procedure to backing up the actual vB directories? Or would a simple directory/file copy (or XCopy) be sufficient?

I'm sorry for the detailed questions - I'm just trying to get all the answers to backing up in one solid location. :)

Thanks for reading through this mess! :)

  • Those are simply files that can be backed up the normal way.

  • close forum is ideal but not needed... then follow steps outlined at http://i4net.tv/marticle/get.php?action=getarticle&articleid=10 which is elaborated for mysqldump usage etc at http://www.sitepoint.com/article/678 (which is in my sig along with othe useful info ;) )

What about backing up the actual vB directories - is that something that should be done as well? And would a standard directory copy be good enough?
