When I removed teh doctype everything worked fine. ok so don't use a doctype? well this meesed up my centering cause I use margin:auto to center containers, so I had to be hacky and put text align center in my body css. I have always thought that using doctypes was the suggested (standard) way of doing things, but I have found with this problem, and others in the past that ie7 will not place nice with declared doctypes.

Jack on numerous occations has mentioned that he prefers no doctype/quirks-mode since the browsers rarely change that across new versions. Since no browser is truely standards compliant, they all change with each version getting better and closer... and different.
However, I'm with you... we have to use a doctype. Like many many others out there...
