Think of it literally - radiation is spreading out from a single point and adapting as they go along.
The evolution of mammals is the classic example of adaptive radiation. They started off as a group of small to medium rather unspecialized species, but over time have spread to almost all corners of the globe in every environment possible and have become adapted to different lifestyles/environments/ecological niches along the way. You have hoofed mammals that have developed to run fast and escape from predators such as big cats which have specialized teeth to kill. Bats have taken to the air while seals and whales have returned to the sea. Polar bears have adapted to the Arctic while jerboas are tiny rodents that are adapted to desert conditions.
Almost every possible environment you can think of (except the Antarctic) and there will be a variety of highly adapted mammals living there.
