I use a Freecom USB external DVD/CD writer; I bought mine at Argos. It comes with software which allows you to write files to either CDs or DVDs (although the former you can do anyway if you have Windows XP). The drive has an external power supply and simply needs to be plugged into a USB port to access it like any other drive. You can play music or movies from it as with any normal internal drive. Does your current drive read any disks?
It may only want cleaning. You can by CD/DVD drive cleaners at computer shops. Usually these consist of a CD ROM kind of disk which has a small soft brush which cleans the lens in your CD/DVD drive. I'd check this out first before spending money on an external drive.
It would probably be cheaper to replace you current DVD drive with another internal one. You can get these very cheap from PC World and the like. external hard drive Content at ZDNet UK:: External drives that don’t use the hard disk’s native interface to spinning media drive, weight considerations banishing the bundled DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo http://www.zdnet.co.uk/tsearch/external+hard+drive.htmHOME |
Caroline, I wouldn't bother with an external DVD/CD combo. Normally this would mean that it can read both CDs and DVDs, but only burn to CD.
Just go for a DVD±RW. This means that it can read AND write (burn) to both CDs and DVDs.
