What has the UK/is doing to cope with our aging population?

  • What should they do i ask

  • It's doing and done nothing, except maybe wasted the pension money people were hoping to live on in retirement.

  • Nothing. It sucks.

  • Turning them into fossil fuel to heat the homes of immigrants.

  • Raping us of taxes daily. Increasing the pension age so we work longer. Bailing out the banks, who made billions off us, to the tune of £500billion.
GENDYS Conference 2002 - Ageing and Coping::
Surely it is better to cope with something than to cope with doing nothing. All things being equal, by 2026 half the population will be over 55,

Easy when we can barely feed ourselves.
... Just when you thought the banking sector was messing up the world, lack of pre-planning is doing it for us.

Edit. Nice Beaver, two answers down, to whom I gave a thumbs up has summed up the equation - however wrong, though I understand the reasoning.
Immigration costs us more than it benefits us, and without prejudice I would state that I'd rather die younger than to see this country swamped by low payed workers from foreign lands contributing, perhaps to our oldies, only to sink our country when they reach retirement age.
We are over populated, and don't stand a chance in hell of being like the generations that are currently in rest homes.

  • If the population mean age continues to rise, due to low birthrate and longer living - then we will reach a point where the working population can no longer support the dependent aged population. One way of redressing this is to allow immigration to replenish the deficit of young working adults and children who will provide the nation's future work force. Of course, many people on YA will not acknowledge the validity of this argument - preferring to believe that immigration has a net negative effect.
