I was raised with dogs all my life, but I think I would like a cat. What do I need to know/have to get one?Should I get a purebred like a Bengal (I've been reading alot about them and I think that's what I want) or just go to the pound and get one from there for now?How much on average does it cost to feed/care for a cat? Thanks!
EVERYTHING
Rescued cats make awesome pets.
The most important thing you need to know is what to feed your cat. Do not feed dry food. Quality canned food only.
Listed below is an excellent site on cat nutrition.
Right cats :) i love cats and my mother breeds them, and so do i. purebred cats tend to have a shorter life span then "moggies" as purebreds have allot of inbreeding and therefore genetic deformaties. cat food for one cat costs about £4 a fortnight, and vetbills can be upto £1500 for surgery.
I hope you an kitty have a nice life together :)
My cat goes through a bag of cat food every two weeks which is like 7 dollars. Hes pretty spoiled so I also feed him one 3 oz can of wet cat food every night. The cans are only 50 cents. Cats are usually pretty stinky especially if he uses a litter box. My cat is potty trained. He'll scratch on the door. It was easier than training a dog. Get one from the pound. There are plenty there that need good homes. I had a full blooded persian that i paid 500 dollars for. He had so many urinary tract problems and only could eat 30 dollar bags of food from the vet. It was ridiculous.
rule #1. it is not a dog. it is not loyal. if your house is on fire, the dog will die trying to save you. the cat will run next door to the neighbors and beg for food.
dogs will greet, thank you for the food. cats will wait for you to come to them, demand food, then give you a " its late" look.
other then that, it is about the same as a dog, just cheaper. because they are smaller. and cats need less from you. they like to be alone a lot, or sleep next to you.
purebred or pound is up to you. purebreds are not better, they just look better.
get one from the pound they need good homes. they usually spay/neuter them there too. i have one and it costs me maybe 25 bucks a month for an 18 pound bag of cat food and litter. i get his toys from the dollar store, although he seems to prefer milk bottle rings and plastic pop bottle lids.and get a flashlight in a dark room, he loves it. good luck.
Bengals can be expensive to obtain and as energetic and destructive as a dog. Head on down to your local animal shelter and check out what they've got. Chances are you'll end up with a lively, well-adjusted cat without spending a ton of money, and you can rest easy knowing you've saved a life.
Cats require quality food, litter boxes, toys and then other things depending on the cat's personality. The food issue is very important in my opinion, feeding a proper diet over time can decrease risks like diabetes and kidney issues. Feed a high protein diet that is low in corn and other fillers.
Regarding litter boxes, make sure you've got two to encourage the cat to use the eliminate in the proper areas. It's also very important that the boxes are kept very clean, or the cat could decide to eliminate somewhere else.
Toys can be as simple as milk jug rings or as extravagant as catnip-stuffed hand-sewn organic cotton mice. Just be sure the cat has a lot of them to keep him busy when you're not paying attention to him.
It's always a good idea to keep an emergency vet fund.
Depending on many factors, keeping a cat can be expensive. But IMO, it's totally worth it. :)
First off: Cats rock! I've grown up with cats and have almost always had one. I suggest you get only 1 cat, because then he will really socialize with you a lot more than if you have multiple cats. Another thing to know: Cats have a lot of personality and once you get to know them, you'll find they can also be a lot of fun. They will play "hide and go seek," and will play "whack" you with a paw "on safety" (a paw without extended claws). But they also spend most of the day sleeping. I believe they sleep between 18-20 hours a day (as adults). So if you're looking for high energy all day long, better stick to dogs. Lastly: Save a kitten from the pound!
