I already have a pretty good list, but what are some more?
Here's what I have so far:
Hendrix
Funkadelic
Parliament
Living Colour
Primus
Fishbone
Faith No More
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Lenny Kravitz
Incubus
I'm primarily looking for black artists/bands, but any other bands will do. And please give bands that are MAINLY funk-rock (or funk-metal), not a band that did only one funk-style song.
Dink.
Frank Zappa's pretty much invented rock fusion in the late 60's early 70's. (If you want to go that far back) His most rock/funk albums are Over-Night Sensation, Sheik Yerbouti and Roxy and Elsewhere.
Some new stuff (well mid 90's) would be a great band called the Phunk Junkeez, their earlier stuff has more funk to it.
Yeah , Living Colour , 24-7 spyz pretty much come to mind. Tell ya what - last year i saw Morris Day and the Time at a festival, and the hits we all know aren't the same when they throw em' down live. More grindy guitar, more on the edge band, they just kicked my #ss! YOu can also try Kings X, more rock though , but Doug Pinnick's got that soul....
If I could recommend a genre, you might try Nu Metal.
It has the speed and guitar work of Thrash/Death, a mix up of vox from other genres (although it sounds as though you might like KoRn with there hip hop vox).
The reason I'm recommending Nu Metal is because often they have funk inspired bass and drums. The genre is hardcore, but that's a plus for me.
Mother's Finest....way ahead of their time
24-7 Spyz
I'd check the website for the Black Rock Coalition for dozens more.
btw, Primus aren't Black.
