What about this tank set up?

  • What do you think about this take set up for a five gallon tank?

If I use the inch of fish per gallon, then I can have 5 fish, do ground swimming fish like corri's and loaches count?

Could I have five tetras, and a louch?

or Five tetras and a small freshwater crayfish?

  • Way too many fish for that size tank. I only keep one betta in my 5 Gal tank.

The smaller the tank the harder it is to maintain good water.

The inch per gallon rule does not work well. When stocking a tank you have to account for the amount of waste each type of fish will produce. Also the adult size they will reach, and what levels of the tank they will all be in.

The only think really that get live happy in a 5 Gal is a betta or 3 or 4 guppies all same sex. Maybe a dwarf gourami could live in a 5 gal by it's self. BUT really that small of a tank is not good for most fish.

  • You dont want six things stuck in one 5 gallon tank. I would say three or four at most.

  • Yesterday nosoop4u told me that you can have 4-5 cherry barbs in a 5 gallon tank if you don't slack off on your water changes. And they're hardier then neon tetras.

Oh and yeah... that rule is not reliable. Imagine a 24 inch fish (silver arrowana) in a 24 gallon tank.

Edit: A few (2 or 3) MALE guppies will be okay. And you should only get males so your 2 or 3 guppies won't turn into 20 or 30 guppies.

  • k the one inch per gallon rule is complete bull. 5 neons would be good there may be a pecking order since its only 5 gallons but that will work itself out.and i dont think you want to mess with crayfish ,i think you should look at the upside down cattfish grows 2 inches or a otto cat

  • 1 inch per fish rule DOES NOT WORK

you could have 3 cories maximum
some loaches might work but it depends what type
a few guppies or a betta would also work

  • <5 neons or 1 betta. that's about in in 5 gallons... and that's with a good filter and knowledge of how to cycle tank.

  • The loading of a fish tank is in direct proportion to the surface area of the water, in general 1inch of fish per 12sq inch of surface area, in this case the fish are small so you could go for 6sq inch of surface area per inch.
measure the front then x by the side in inchs then divide by 12 will give you the amount of inch's of fish or in this case by 6.

its more to do with the amount of oxygen that can be exchanged at the surface than the quality of water given that the fish are not going to be excessively dirty fish such as Oscars or Arrowanas
