I'd say it's ironic because the crop grew abundantly and healthily, not reflecting the loss of Kuti (Sorry, what's that? Is it a person?).
The crop grew healthily because it was "indifferent" and obviously didn't understand the human loss, being cheerful and healthy and oblivious. It works backwards and ironically, creating bitterness and resent because of the contrast.
