I have been doing extra chores and babysitting my sister for free. I get all As on my report card. I would really like to get a dog from the shelter but my parents think I won't take care of it. I already feed and clean the litter for my cat. What are some good ways to show them I am responsible enough to own a dog?
You sound like you already have some responsiblities that you are keeping up with, maybe they think you will use your schoolwork as an excuse and not take care of the dog.
Does your family have enough money to pay for vet fees and dog food? It's not just the cost of the dog from the shelter, but the shots each year and medication for preventing heartworm. Do you have a fenced in yard? If not, how will you exercise the dog?
Good luck to you, you sound like a responsible person already. I hope they let you prove yourself by letting you get a dog soon.

And when you do have your arguments ready..

Willing to pay for all the food, vet bills, and walk and play with the dog..
Responsibility now is not the entire issue. The dog will live 10 years or more. What happens when you go to college? Your mother gets stuck with a dog, that's what.
This is why so many college freshmen get puppies - their parents said "no dear, the dog will live 10 years and you're going to college in 3 years." The animal shelter where I live fills up with young dogs every May - the puppies that students adopted the previous September.
If your parents want a dog, it can be a family pet. If you want a dog, please wait until you're an adult.
first of all, i hate when people do this. you're parents have their reasons we can't change their minds for them.
Ask them specifically why, and see if you can improve their view on why they think you wouldn't make a good dog owner.
As a former cat owner i will tell you that taking care of a dog is nothing like a cat.
You do things like.
Clean your room and KEEP it clean.
Sweep the floor.
Do your homework on time.
Get good grades.
Don't fight with your brothers and sisters.
Don't talk back to adults.
Eat what your parents give you and don''t make any faces about it.
Remember to share.
Do research on taking care of a dog and what breed of dog you want.
Ask them nicely and don't whine or beg when you talk about getting a new pet.
its not about being responsible, or rather, it is, but remember, a dog is a huge responsibility. I just got my rottweiler puppy a month ago and lately i have only been getting a few hours of sleep. Dogs are a huge responsibility and WILL restrict you from going away from your home. Your sacrificing going away to your friends house for a sleepover. Your sacrificing going away for a week. You will be bound to your house at least till your dog is old enough to be housetrained and can be on its own, alone, in your house. If your up to that, then get a dog.
As for the shelter, i would not reccomend it. Dont get me wrong, a lot of dogs that come from a shelter are fine but a lot are also psychologically challenged as in they are scared of anything and everything or they are just anxious all the time. Be careful in picking a dog because your basically signing a 19 year contract to care for that dog. Look into purebreeds or adoption agencies. www.petfinder.com could help or call your local breeders.
By the way, im a freshman in high school and I have a 4 month rottweiler puppy which i got a month ago. I know what your going through because I have been there and my parents were against getting a dog. It took me ten months to convince them to get one.
make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. cats dont want half as much attention as dogs want. like the others have said, ask your parents why they dont want you to get one. and maybe you guys can come to an agreement. keep getting good grades and all that. it will help.
ask your parents if you can doggy sit for a friends dog for a while. get a friend who will let you borrow there dog. and acctually show your parents you can handle it. do rescearch on dog shelters and puppy mills and then start telling your parents things like "a shetler dog would be saving a life from eventually having to be put down" or even vollenteer at a local pet shelter, with parents permission. even if they wount let you have a dog you would still be interacting with them. or start a dog walking service
tell them the benefits of dogs on humans: prevents depression (the state i have been in after the death of my dog). makes u live longer, can be a watch dog, etc.
or give up like i did
Well start getting into dogs like interested in them and ask your parents every month for a dog.
it should work in a few months.
