How do I get my venus flytrap to enter dormancy? And when do I do it?
If you provide the right conditions for your plant, it will enter dormancy naturally. If you live somewhere that the weather doesn't terribly cold in the winter, you can just leave your plant outside all year. If you are familiar with the hardiness zones, zone 7 or better is ok for leaving your plant outside.
However, if you don't have the option to leave your plant outside all year, then you have to put it somewhere that will induce dormancy. Dormancy is brought on by a decrease in photoperiod and cooler temperatures. I live in Boulder, CO, which is zone 5. That's too cold to leave my plants outdoors all year, so around the end of October (or whenever the first freeze comes), I move them indoors on an unheated porch where they'll stay until the chance of frost is gone in the spring. They are on the natural cycle with the sun, so they know when to go dormant and when to start growing again. And the fact that the porch is unheated keeps it cool enough to induce dormancy. The optimal temperature range during dormancy is between 35F and 55F. There are many options for dormancy, but the healthiest way is to place the plants somewhere that they can still get sunshine, that they won't be off cycle due to artificial lighting and that the temperatures get cool.
