V2 - Way not to log something?
Published by: jack 2009-01-07

  • Is there a way not to have V2 log a specific block rule?

The problem I am having is that it seems my DSL modem (ActionTec DSL Gateway) sends out broadcasts ( to 255.255.255.255 port 61112) every 5 seconds or so. I never saw these show up in V1 (but maybe I never looked hard enough) but they tend to fill up my blocked log with a bunch of useless entries. I have created a log filter to filter them out but if I can stop them from being logged in the first place, that would be better. Plus, the log filters only seem to be able to include items, not exclude them. That means as I add rules in the future, they will not automatically be added to the filter.

BTW, if anyone knows why my modem does this in the first place, I would be curious to know.

    Rick.

  • Well, I disconnected my phone line from the modem/router and the packets kept coming so it must be the modem that is sending the packets. Remote port starts at 50000 and increments by one each time. Local address is always 255.255.255.255 and local port is 61112 with UDP protocol.

No biggie, it has probably always been doing this. I just never noticed. Certainly fills up my log files in V2 though!

    Rick.

  • Could you confirm that these packets are coming from your router and not just through it? (if your router does NAT then it will alter the IP address so it appears to be the sender). Is 61112 the local port or the remote port? What is important for incoming traffic is the local port - once we have this, the purpose of these packets can be identified.

You can (sort of) exclude packets that match a criteria - define a rule to cover that critera and then define a filter based on "Reason" - the selection dialog for this will list all the rules at which point you include them all except for your criteria rule. Packets covered under other rules as well as your criteria rule will still be included, but this should be step in the right direction - and you can exclude any overlapping rules when they are found.

  • Well, you are not alone. :) I managed to find this thread (http://www.wirelessleiden.nl/lists/gebruikers/03-2003/msg00063.html) where someone else has the same traffic - but the thread is in Dutch and is about ARP/DHCP issues (with wireless!) as far as I can make out :D

The most likely explanation is that the router is using its own proprietary protocol to try and find other routers of its ilk. Quite a few manufacturers have this feature to allow for easier management - so this may be covered in the router documentation. It may even be possible to disable it somewhere in the router configuration.

If your logs are getting on the big side from all this traffic, right-clicking and selecting Clear Log... will delete everything. Better control over log size is on the ToDo list.
