I am sure many added more user ranks and changed them around a bit.
I am unsure on how to do my user ranking. How do you do it? What are your minimum post requirements for each rank?
I rank members very mathematically. In the early part they progress quickly in rank, then in the middle they progress a little slower and then at top the progress very slowly.
I created these rank images that incorporate the rank name. Such as a white rectangle with the words that say "Member" etc. I found this was the easier way for people to identify with the rank.
I did try the military insignia from BF2, i also tried the spaceage insignia from startrek and Starship Troopers and BF2142. But, the members i had, had difficulty learning what the ranks mean etc. and this isnt really a sci-fi or military forum, its more of a magazine community forum.
So i went with my own unique ranking system and images based on the kinds of words that resorts or airlines or credit card companies might use to recognize their members. Spent a day searching a dictionary and thesaurus for these words that identify my customer base etc.

Once they reach 4,000 posts then i will create a new Titanium Rank (or crimson black look) with four or five new membership levels. Since i am a new forum, i started the ranks on the lower side, but as people reach several thousand posts, i will tweak it slightly.
For Moderators/Admins
RED RANK
Guest Moderator: moderates one subforum within a main forum.
Moderator: moderates one main forum section with subforums.
Group Moderator: moderates more than one main forum section with several subforums.
Ambassador: moderates all main forum sections and all subforums.
General guidelines:
Most forums have less than 1k members and those members usually average fewer than 100 posts, with many falling around 10-30 posts.
Popular forums might have 500k members, over 1 million posts and you will have a lot of members with 1k or more posts.
So you should create your ranking based on how successful you expect your forum.
If you expect a small turnout and not too many dedicated forum posters, then go with a lower ranking. If you expect lots of members and lots of daily replies by members, then go with the higher rankings.
I like rankings because it awards forum participation, and people sometimes strive to reach their next rank. Just make sure your Terms of Use covers stat and rank padding as a no-no. some people just post silly replies like "yes" or "i agree" just to boost their own post ranking. On my TOS members are asked to only post things that contribute to the discussion, not silly posts like "good thread" or "yes' or "your right" etc.
^ thanks for the details. That gives ma a good idea on how I can better do mine

For example, I give out one of these "http://www.familyfriendsfirearms.com/images/NL0.gif" for every 5 posts that a member makes. When they reach ten of them at 50, they get one of these "http://www.familyfriendsfirearms.com/images/NL1.gif".
Since they got it at the fifty level, I use half of that number (25). When they reach eight of them at 250, they move on to one of these "http://www.familyfriendsfirearms.com/images/NL2.gif". Using half of that number (250/2), they get a new one after each 125 posts.
When they reach six of them at 1,000, they move on to one of these "http://www.familyfriendsfirearms.com/images/NL3.gif". Using half of that number (1000/2), they get a new one after each 500 posts.
When they reach six of them at 4,000, they move on to one of these "http://www.familyfriendsfirearms.com/images/NL4.gif". Using half of that number (4000/2), they get a new one after each 2,000 posts.
When they reach six of them at 16,000, they move on to one of these "http://www.familyfriendsfirearms.com/images/NL5.gif". Using half of that number (16000/2), they get a new one after each 8,000 posts.
When they reach six of them at 64,000, they move on to one of these "http://www.familyfriendsfirearms.com/images/NL6.gif". Using half of that number (64000/2), they get a new one after each 32,000 posts.
I already have folks at the five-star level.
Well it varies from forum to forum.. Most of them start low like 0, 10, 40, 100, 200 then get higher..
but if ya wanna be unique then do your own :)
Sir Knight, you should have started a new topic instead of reviving one that was nearly 2 years old.
That said and since you have already gotten replies...
I don't reward members for post count. I've seen far too many forum members post crap just to get a high post count. I use rank to denote rank: charter member, staff member (their specific position), contributors of articles and those who have donated. I also provide links to member websites in a module on all non-forum pages for those who have participated regularly with quality posts. I am the sole judge, but some have been recommended by others. Other forms of appreciation I use are custom graphics in signatures, custom avatars and even help those who need it with their own website problems.

I do the same every time I make a user rank list for my site or others.
50 User Ranks from 0 posts to 10,000 posts, as most users will ever get over 10 K on a board before leaving, dying, or just not posting anymore.
I have an accounting degree so I calculated the spacing so that in the beginning the ranks change fast and the farther you get the slower the ranks change.
The Final Fantasy User Rank list I made for example is used at:
thefinalfantasy.com a vb forum
I made my own Christian one for my current website using the same numerical format and changing the ranks to be Christian-oriented of course.
I like to create new user ranks at 0, 50, 100, 250 and 500 posts. I also tend to add additional ranks at 750, 1000 and 1500 posts.

Wow - those are sharp looking I bet. I have to add some grahics. Right now we only have two ranks basically telling ppl they are 100+ or 200+ posters (allowing them in special hidden forums). I like the star idea a lot. Very "military" friendly. I bet the men in our forum would like it.
