OK, first some background. I purchased a usb turntable and have been transitioning my albums to an itunes library and now I am considering getting an ipod. I actually have 2 questions for you (probably) younger (and smarter) people out there. First of all , I know that the usb speed of the lap top I am using for my turntable work is one step lower than 2.0 speed.........so what is it...........how do I find out what it is. And if I buy an ipod that says it uses a 2.0 usb will it work with this ancient laptop that I am using to transfer my albums to digital. Thanks to everyone out there in advance for their help. There is only two USB versions right now. USB 2.0 and the one before it being 1.1
Basically USB 2.0 is 480mbit (~ 60Megabytes per second), and 1.1 is 12Mbit (~ 1.5 megabytes per second ).

Depending on your laptop you might actually be able to buy a PCMCIA or Cardbus adapter that gives you some actual USB 2.0 slots.
By the way as far as external storage goes, FireWire 400 is better than USB 2.0 even though its 400mbit, its actually twice as fast because it doesn't have as much latency (delay) between tasks. Course this tip doesn't do you much good if you have nothing to plug into firewire :P
An Ipod will work with you laptop as long as you also meet the software requirement (such as the new touch and nano require iTunes 8, and whatever itunes 8 requires). But the USB 1.1 speed will feel ungodly slow as you you transfer music and applications to the iPod.
