Well here is how DNS works:
Every computer has an IP address. It lets us comunicate with other computers that also have an IP address.

You can surf to www.hotmail.com, a URL that most of us know well and is easy to remember.
The protocol has no use with an URL (i.e. www.hotmail.com), it just needs an other IP address where it can comunicate with.
It needs numbers not some text to know where the site is located...
So there is a need for a mechanism that makes sure users can type an URL (i.e. www.hotmail.com) into there browser and wich then translates the hostname in an IP address (i.e. 216.33.238.7) so the TCP/IP protocol can make a connection.
Imagin there would not be such a mechanism...
You would be forced to remember every interesting site with its IP address.
The mechanism that takes care of this is called DNS.
