Suggestions for spending birthday cheque
Published by: smith 2009-01-07
  • For my birthday, I was given a cheque for 100 (about USD140). Can you suggest some things for me to spend it on?

  • Some great suggestions there. However, I did want to comment on the "naming a star" suggestion. To me, getting such a thing is a waste of money. While I suppose it can offer some fun on some small level, you'd probably want to put the money elsewhere. Here's an article from Wired last year about the whole Star Naming thing: http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,49345,00.html Here's a FAQ that tries to educate people on what "star naming" places offer: http://www.iau.org/IAU/FAQ/starnames.html I was going to recommend that you use that money instead to purchase the wonderful film Koyaanisqatsi, which was recently released on DVD. However, it is not yet available in the UK. But if you do get to see it, I think you'll enjoy the experience it offers. • Hello again Michael2, I understand both of your comments on the "Name a Star". I had included that as I thought it unique and most likely the kind of thing that one would not spend their money on, but perhaps might indulge with birthday cash. I tend to recall that I might have several square inches of Alaska in the form of certificates issued by Quaker cereals from my early youth and saw this in a similar light. And as to age, I can't definitively say what triggered my reaction other than I just made the assumption that it would be someone younger that might have difficulty (another assumption) deciding how to spend their birthday bounty. I would have had decidedly different suggestions for a youth, teenager or someone in Texas for that matter, and I was very glad I asked prior to making any suggestions. Best regards, -=clouseau=-

  • Based in London. Age 44. Lawyer. Classical music (esp Handel & baroque), opera, computers, physics, technology, literature, genealogy, countryside. Is that enough? No need to restrict to those, though - I also like new experiences. Only USD135 left now ....

  • Some very good ideas there. I'm actually going to do the gliding. I did a week's gliding course when I was about 15, and I'd love to have another shot at it now.

  • Hi Michael, Tell us a little more about yourself so we can better help. Age, hobbies, dreams...anything that might lead us in a direction to find those things that will delight you. -=clouseau=-

  • By the way, I'd be absolutely fascinated to know what made you assume I was 'much younger'. I'm not quite sure what to make of that! Perhaps it was my babyface complexion that did it :(

  • Hello Michael2, And thanks for a wonderful question! And first, Happy Birthday! Great clarification. I'm glad I asked. I had just assumed you were much younger. I found what I think is a great gift, but you'll have to add just a few quid out of your own pocket for this one: *************************************************************** Drive A Classic Ferrari 109.00 The chance to take a Ferrari 308QV for a spin around a famous race track. Three laps of one of the most famous circuits in the UK is a treat in itself but with a Ferrari 308 QV to do them in this will surely be a memory that lasts a lifetime. The stunning 308 is capable of over 150mph, boasts cornering and handling capabilities that are out of this world and accelerates like nothing you will ever have driven before location - Goodwood, West Sussex (South East) Available online at: http://www.hard2buy4.co.uk/merchants/buyagift/classic-cars.htm This one may be hard to top, but does exceed the 100 budget by a tad. But then, this one falls a bit under: *************************************************************** Gliding Half Day Mini Course 99.00 Be free as a bird as you soar on thermals over the beautiful English countryside. These exhilarating Winch Launch Glider Flight lessons will take you to between 1000 and 1500 feet above the ground. You will be able to see far across the rolling English countryside on this course to remember. The lessons will last between 5 and 20 minutes in which time you will learn to turn and manoeuvre the glider.(4 Winch launch lessons) location - Surrey, South London (South East) *************************************************************** Ok, rather have something more lasting? Try this one: http://www.starnames.com/affiliates/affiliates/homepage.htm Thank you for visiting our website. You have taken your first step towards naming a star - an imaginative and symbolic gift. The naming of a star is symbolic rather than scientific. As well as receiving your gift set, your chosen star name is registered and ed in "A Personal Guide to the Universe", our listing of new star names and their telescopic co-ordinates. The book is published, and as a publication is deposited with the legal deposit libraries. Present and future generations may therefore look up the star name in our register and using binoculars or a telescope, locate the star in the sky. Using a secure server you can buy on-line this gift all from just UK 49! Just click below to go straight to the order forms. *************************************************************** I almost feel like a technology gift might be a let down after a chance to name your own star or race a Ferrari, but http://www.hard2buy4.co.uk/merchants/paramount/index.htm has a few items that caught my eye: You could even name a star and buy this next intriguing gadget within your budget: L'espion digital camera Even smaller than a matchbox!! Using the camera is a cinch. A built in retractable Optical Viewfinder allows you to center subjects and keeps the protruding piece safe when not in use. There are only two buttons on the camera, one being the Shutter/Select button, and one being the mode button, which allows you to display the surprising amount of various options. These options included switching resolutions, continuous shutter for recording video, clearing all pictures from the memory, and the always-helpful self-timer. Also convenient is the use and easy installation of a single AAA battery, avoiding the annoying (and expensive) battery hunt that is often involved for many cameras. Ideal to keep in your pocket for unexpected picture opportunities. Overall, an amazingly small camera at an equally small price... 39.95 *************************************************************** Or...Interested in a physical challenge? Unicycle Ever wondered how easy, (or hard) it is to ride a Unicycle? The contestants on Big Brother were challenged and managed more than 10 seconds after only a couple of days practice. Satisfy your curiosity and order one to see. We can tell you it took Pete at BoysStuff just 2 hours to be able to ride but several days to master. You'll be able go to parties full of confidence knowing that if you have to duel with a clown, you'll stand a pretty good chance of winning. This unicycle is made from the highest quality lightweight materials and has an ergonomically designed seat to help with balance and poise. So no more wondering how others did it ... get your own and get practising..... Unicycle Boys Stuff Price: 99.99 http://www.hard2buy4.co.uk/merchants/boys-stuff/index.htm *************************************************************** Perhaps you are a coffee drinker? If so, you will not find better than: Jamaican Blue Mountain. Trust me, it has to be experienced. http://www.bluemountaincoffee.com/ About The Bean: Almost everyone who has heard of Jamaica Blue Mountain knows that it is the most expensive coffee in the world, but not everyone knows why. When an article - whether it is a Rolls-Royce or a Stradivarius violin - acquires a reputation as being "the best in the world," the reputation tends to develop a life of its own. Baked in the Old World style, these Cheesecakes are individually hand made with a cookie dough (not Crumbs) bottom and sides. Each cake is baked three times.
