My family name is Stanton and I've been told an ancestor of mine was a
doctor who practised in the north for many years and it is believed
the hospital was named after him. If he is the one, I think he would
have been born in County Durham in England and emigrated to Canada in
the early part of the century (or before) He was for a time on
Vancouver Island or Saturna Island in B.C.
Hi, Beajane...
If you'll excuse me asking, what is it exactly that you want to know?
Did you want us to try and ascertain who the hospital is named for,
and whether that individual is likely to be your ancestor?

I am almost certain that the hospital was named after a woman. I have
contacted someone associated with the hospital to make sure, and to
ask whether the name has something to do with a doctor who practiced
in the north. It appears that she was married to a doctor named
Stanton who practiced in the north, so that may be the person you are
thinking of.
If I receive a reply confirming the name, would you like for me to
post it as an answer, even if the reply states that the hospital is
named after this woman and not her husband? Yellowknife Dermatologist Doctor Directory - OmniMedicalSearch.com:: Click here to submit your Dermatology practice. Dear beajane-ga;
Hello again and thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer
another one of your interesting questions. Having worked tirelessly on
your previous genealogy question you are well aware that I have since
become quite familiar with your family history.
In her obituary the Stanton family themselves tell us that Stanton
Hospital was named in honor of Dr. Oliver Lawson Stanton of Toronto,
Canada. Here is the obituary for RUTH LEWIS STANTON that confirms the
answer to your namesake question if not the potential relationship
question:
STANTON, Ruth Lewis - of Salt Spring Island, B.C. died on March 25,
2002. She was born in 1905 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, the daughter of
Harry K. Lewis and Julia Cain Lewis. Ruth went to Mount Allison Ladies
College studying fine and applied arts, then trained as an
occupational therapist at Bellevue Hospital in New York. She then
trained as a nurse at the Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto,
followed by graduate studies at the University of Toronto. In 1935 she
married Dr. Oliver Lawson Stanton of Toronto. They first lived in
Chibougamau, Quebec, and subsequently, from 1935 to 1960, made their
home in Yellowknife, N.W.T., where he was the first and, for many
years, the only doctor. The Stanton Regional Hospital at Yellowknife
was named after him. They retired to Salt Spring Island in 1960, but
spent their summers at her beloved Lake Annis, Nova Scotia. She is
survived by her younger sister, Betty Vickery, Yarmouth, and her
daughter, Paula Stanford (Peter), England, and her children and
grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband and her two sisters,
Esther Crowell and Adeline Henderson. A memorial service was held on
April 6 at All Saints by-the Sea, Salt Spring Island. There will be
family flowers only, however if so desired, a memorial donation may be
made to The Norwood (Lake Annis) Cemetery Association

This answer is reconfirmed in these archival documents:

(SEE PAGE 4 its actually numbered as page 3 discounting the cover
page)
I did find a reference to a RUTH STANTON HOSPITAL in the same general
area but this is obviously not the same Stanton Hospital that later
became Stanton Regional Medical Center since the reference indicates
that the building is in ruin and subject to demolition.

I found nothing to indicate that these Stantons were related to your
George Bidder Stanton but if you happen to recognize one of the names
in the obituary Id be happy to try and pursue that angle for you as
far as possible.
Below you will find that I have carefully defined my search strategy
for you in the event that you need to search for more information. By
following the same type of searches that I did you may be able to
enhance the research I have provided even further. I hope you find
that that my research exceeds your expectations. If you have any
questions about my research please post a clarification request prior
to rating the answer. Otherwise, I welcome your rating and your final
comments and I look forward to working with you again in the near
future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.

I did one more search and found information that the hospital may be
named for the husband. Conceivably it is named for both of them.
In any event, you can let me know whether you would be satisfied with
confirmation of the name, even if it is not the doctor you are
thinking of (though it may be well be).
This is directed to tutuzdad who gave me the most complete answer to
my question
I think this confirms there is not a family relationship- the dates
would be wrong Thanks for the information
I had likewise found information that the hospital was named for Ruth
Lewis Stanton and/or Dr. Oliver Stanton. I think that the old Ruth
Stanton Hospital was a predecessor, or the predecessor, to this
hospital, but it still may be that this hospital is named for Oliver
Stanton.
Sorry I didn't make myself clear - yes to your assumption. I would
like to know who the hospital was named for and whether that person
was an ancestor of mine.
