Solution for easier to use Playlists | | Published by: webmaster 2009-01-07 |
guys, as it is, playlists are not very useful. i can go ahead and create some by hitting y and adding songs to playlist files one at a time and then if i want to really get involved, i can rename those playlists and save several.
this isn't optimal by any measure. plus, as you add or change your music, these files can get outdated quickly.
what do you think of playlists based on data stored in each file? doesn't every format that xbmc plays support a comment field at the very least? if so then we could use that field to add various playlist keywords and then just create playlists that look for those keywords.
then, if i delete a file, no need to worry about my playlists. if i add a file it'll be in existing playlists as long as i add the right word(s).
even better though, i think, would be an interactive playlist screen to let me build my playlists based on my desires (not songs yet). things like "my favorites", "wife's favorties", "workout music", "happy music", "romantic", "upbeat", whatever. and then just let me use the interface to assign songs to any or all of those list and let a song be in as many as i like. also, support a feature that allows me to quickly see any songs that are not part of any playlists to quickly move them to where they go so they're not effectively orphaned. WMP 11 - Burn Problems - Media Player:: 6 postsIt's not a solution, but one way round this is to create your playlist within WMP (easier menus than other layouts) and then use Roxio (I use EMC 8 - or http://forums.techarena.in/media-player/732955.htmHOME | Minor improvements:: Playlist length calculation now available during playback; Unified options dialog, Including a redesigned Options dialog, Raduga 3.5 is easier to use, http://www.mbcradio.org/Raduga/index.htmlHOME |
this would be rather powerful in my view and would require anything from the file formats supported. it'd just need an indexed list and we'd be set. you could easily create dozens of radically different playlists for any mood, person or desire.
i'd have playlists based on all the genres, the mood concepts of mood logic, my favorites, holiday tunes, by band, albums, etc. then it's a simple matter of picking my playlist for that session and whether or not i want songs shuffled, repeated, etc., and i'm rolling. Yamahas MusicCAST System – The One-stop Music Storage and :: To make the In-wall Client easier to use, Yamaha has incorporated four buttons on the main controller that can be assigned to the user’s favorite playlists http://news.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/10381/94362.htmlHOME |
without this sort of feature, i can have access to or store thousands of songs but i can't really interact with them all very well.
thoughts?
the ability to move a selected song 'up' or 'down' in the list
oh yes, i miss this feauture everytime i use xbmc.
i've posted some suggestions in the past:
- change color of files who are added to the playlist.
- shuffle-button in music (not only in playlist).
it's hard to add all music files manually to the playlist before you can shuffle your songs.
- where is the playlist-button for videos ?
it only exists for my music, but it was useful for music videos, ...
yes, playlists are not very useful in the way they are.
does anyone think playlists are fine the way they are?
- shuffle-button in music (not only in playlist).
* * it's hard to add all music files manually to the playlist before you can shuffle your songs.
yeah, that would be great.
a "jump to current playing file", also would be nice!?
the keyword idea i mentioned in the first post here. the problem is, would it work for all supported formats? something like that would be great because then i can have playlists based on keywords and not worry about too many orphaned files.
but having to manually build playlists with the current interface is painful so making minor tweaks to that just doesn't make sense to me. my song list is 1500 songs long and i know i can't be anywhere near having the most. trying to pick 20 soungs out of that list would take me an hour! i'd need a playlist just for playing music while i build playlists.
a pc-based solution could then handle all the complexities of keeping everything fresh. if it sees a new file it could put it into a "not in any playlist" group so that you know it needs to go somewhere. that sort of thing.
i know one decent coder but couldn't interest him in doing it as he's not a music fan and needs to be motivated by the topic. i also contacted a couple of the m3u playist editor publishers and they just saw no benefit in making changes for such a small group. seems we're on our own on this one.
oops, i realy love the music interface style of xbmc as it is now. with the playlist, searchfunction, browsing folders and and and.......
some minor tweaks and ..jep nearly perfect for my use :-)
and i love the idea to have this hot changeable mood / situation playlists
as an addition.
mmm what about a mobile phone style onscreen keyboard ?
maybee with t9 feautures.
and tweaks for the searchengine.
-make the yellow button work on the search result screen.
-cache the search result and give us a back button to go back to the last search results
-mark a song with the red button and move it up and down with the dpad inside of the playlist.
-a second playlist screen, so you can take songs from the second playlist to the now playing playlist
-rating of a song by number of times you play it also by manually give it a rating from 1 to 10 (thanks mrmario :-))
-store the comment field of a mp3 tag in the database. and a screen thad shows the keywords stored in the comment field. like "happy music", "romantic", "upbeat"... when selecting one of this keywords the searchengine starts and find all songs assign to this words. (thanks agrajag :-))
- manual adding of *more keywords to the database. maybee 5 ,6 or more keywords per song in the database. because a song can be pappas favorite and mamas favorite :-)
a pc based playlist maker for xbmc would be easy enough to do.
it uses an sqlite database, which can be easily queried to generate the playlists based on whatever info you have.
perhaps someone should get around to throwing usb keyboard support into xbmc (and mouse at the same time)
then we'd have no excuses.
i like them the way they are, except i'd like the ability to move a selected song 'up' or 'down' in the list in a similar manner to how it could be done in xmbc. i know things are 'feature frozen' in order to get 1.0 out the door, but it's one of those usability things that i'd think should be included.
well we have a music database which would make for faster selection based upon certain keywords or such. the only issue is those entering that sort of keywords would be incredibly cumbersome on a console controller.
i just got done counting. i have 7 different types of music and there's no way i'd want to hear all of them just shuffled. one moment i've got rem playing, then enya, then bach and then christmas music?
there has got to be a better way. the good news is, i only get this passionate about quality software because it's frustrating that it's so close to being exactly what you're looking for. if it was junk i wouldn't even bother.
however, at least if we had a shuffle all then we could put our music into folders based on types and leave it at that but even that's not optimal as many songs cross types.
i'm not much of a coder or i'd write my own pc-based utility that went out ftp to the xbox to grab the song info and let you build the lists on the pc. unfortunately all the m3u builders on the pc require the music files to be on drives they can access directly. until we can map xbox drives to windows drives, no luck there.
