I am planning on buying an X-box almost solely to use XBMC. I don't really care that much about games except maybe if a friend came over & had on he wanted to play. I certainly don't care about X-box live.
My question to you all is really simple: *as far as using XBMC is concerned* is there any advantage in installing a modchip compared to just soft modding it (I was planning on using Krayzie's Ndure and Mech Assualt). What can you do with an xbox? [Archive] - DealDatabase Forum :: 28 posts - Last post: Mar 17, 2005I disagree with John and trob to some degree on the issue of using a modchip vs. a softmod. The only thing I have come across is that softmods have trouble dealing with a HD greater than 137Gb. But even this seems to have been sorted out as well when choosing nkpatcher (http://www.instructables.com/id/E3CFQERI5KES84IOT0/).
Forgive me if this is spelled out somewhere in the manuals/FAQ, but I can't seem to find it. What I am looking for I suppose is something like the simple little table in point 22 of the x-box linux "getting started" (http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Getting_Started) (although the "hardware method" they are talking about is not a modchip.)
Thanks a lot for your insights
Tim
3) You don't need fancy chips with multiple BIOSs to run XBMC, and basic chips have become so cheap now (eg Duo X2 GS = $15 delivered to my mailbox) that it is about half the price to chip an X-box than it is to do a single softmod. It is also easier to organise because you don't need to find multiple things like an old game, a memory device and a way to hook it to your PC. Chipping is pretty quick and easy to do on older X-boxs, however if you have an X-box 1.6 chipping requires a lot of soldering. Chip Mod Softmod. This isn't exactly true anymore either. I softmoded my XBox without any special games or hardware or action replay. I used the "hotswap" method to get into the XBox disk and load NDure.

only thing about a modchip is it gives more options for recovery if something ever goes wrong. i choose the softmod route. chips are cheap now so it is a better option these days. but for the price of a chip, u can get the needed tools for a softmod and do a unlimited number of xboxes. good luck!
Thanks to all.
After another whole day's reading about softmodding yesterday, this all makes sense.
After distilling everything here is what I reckon....
1) It doesnt matter much whether you chip or softmod an XBOX as far as using XBMC is concerned. If you use a good technique/chip, then it will run fine with a HDD as large as you like.
2) Since the birth of NDURE, softmodding is now so good that you don't need to chip. The technique will work with any X-box 1.0-1.6. Check out X-box scene forum on XBE exploits for some very good info. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=422789 .

4) Although softmodding one box is more expensive than chipping it, you can softmod as many boxes as you like for nothing, once you have paid for the softmodding bits and pieces. This is quite nice if you think your friends might like one after they see yours.
If you guys reckon I've got something fundamentally wrong, let me know before I go out and spend the $

Sofmoded using SplinterCELL
1 xbox with 250Gb and one with 320 GB
No problem at all and very very happy
I use an xecuter3 /w a 300GB HDD which runs in either stock or modded mode.
I have more success with the chipmods than the softmods but other on the forums have had no issues with softmods so it comes down to your comfort level.
If you go the chipmod route, do it in stages:
- Source out a popular chipmod /w BIOS flash, recovery, FTP, HTTP, and HDD management (unlock, format, etc.) capabilities
- If you plan to upgrade the HDD, make sure to backup the original HDD partitions
- Review the XBMC Online Manual for installation procedures so as to avoid XBMC installation issues
- Lastly, lay down the latest XBMC build; I prefer to place if on F:Apps but it can go anywhere
I have two softmodded boxes running XBMC. One I put in a 250 gb disk... I have a third with an Xecuter 3 chip. I can tell you that the one with the Xecuter chip starts up _alot_ slower than the softmodded boxes for some reason. Other than that I see no difference or problems
