So now with vBulletin 3.7 we have the option to add Social Bookmarking Sites to our threads.

Post the ones you know and I'll add them to this list. I need this info of them:

Title: (the site title)

Icon: (a 16x16 image, attach it to your post)

Link: (link to the bookmark submission URL, use {URL} and {TITLE} in the link for the thread URL and title)

Sorry about that. I had used the image "as-is" from MySpace. I have now resized it to the proper 16x16 dimension and edited my post/attachment.

Myspace, facebook, friendster are more of Social Networking type while an example of Social Bookmarking are the wirefan, reddit, netvous :)

Is there a way to adjust how many fit on a line? I don't like the way it looks.

No. You'll need an addon from www.vbulletin.org.

I have no idea. Possibly ask them on their site.

upgrade to 3.7.3. pl1 if you have not already.

Then go to admincp > vboptions > social bookmarking manager
and add it there.

Sorry - nevermind! I figured it out. They weren't showing up in a style different from the default. I just had to upload them to the right images directory.

If you guys really want icons for all of them why don't you just check this guys blog out, it looks like a spam blog, but I found he linked to my site, so I'm not for sure, but it looks like he has a clean icon for nearly everything.

If not, I still suggest the addthis button, that way you don't need 35 icons to do the same thing that one can do.

Exactly where did you put this code to make it show up on every post?
I would rather put it on every thread. Where would I insert the code to do that?

I had the same question and figured it out - somewhat... so thought I'd share it with anyone else who is interested.

AddThis.com will give you some code. You have to insert that code into each template you use on your site. If you just use the default template, then you only have to do it to that one. But if you have others you have to do it to each one. It's simple though.

Login to your control panel and go to Styles & Templates/Style Manager. Click on the drop-down box next to the desired template and Choose the first Option:

Template Options/Edit Templates

Select

Then click on the SHOWTHREAD TEMPLATES, then SHOWTHREAD option. That will give the SHOWTHREAD template

Then just search on "social bookmarking" and insert this code right ABOVE that. That will place the little AddThis bar just above the social bookmarking section.

You may be able to play around with it to figure where else you might put it. Seems that you can put it pretty much anywhere in this script. It will either work or it won't work. But it doesn't seem to mess up the script if you put it in the wrong place! So feel free to play around with it. Just make sure you're able to delete it quickly in case it does mess something up.

Yeah I'm sure Showthread is the template you need to put it on all threads,

I was right thought after a quick search we have it on our template postbit for the whole forum.

For those who want to use it on every post, here is a copy of our postbit template the add this button is near the top:

that is what my users want... to bookmark.

I have some sub-forum guest-viewable and some other not; the same user could bookmark some threads while others not... not very much useful either.

Not much point in having them on threads that are not viewable to guests. One of the purposes of these links is to get your users to promote your content to other sites and have visitors from those locations visit your site. You can't be sure the visitor is going to be registered already and if they aren't a no permission screen isn't going to promote your site very well.

I seen this on forums and of course its on websites out there. The option to digg, furl, and ten other things to the article.

In searching for something to use for our forum though we found this:

We put it on every post, so any post could be marked, and that solved the problem of any and all bookmark necessities out there.

After doing it, while I'm sure our site wasn't the main propagator of it, I found many high end sites, or heavily trafficked sites using that button as well through simple browsing from time to time throughout my days.

So make your life easy, and just add that instead.

This is weird, but I added Facebook and Yahoo - using the icons that were posted here. But the icons don't show up on the site. I put them in the images/misc directory. I double-checked my spellings and everything's right. But I just get a text link to both sites. The links work fine - but no icon.

Any ideas why these icons aren't showing up? The ones that came with vB show up fine and they are in the same directory as my new ones.

i tried yahoo and myspace. with out the icon, a url is appear in the table.
but if i change the icon to a current one we have in the board, then it displayes correctly. but if i use the icons form this thread, a url with a bookmark site lable (name) is what only appear.

That button can have an adverse affect on php parsing and execution times.

The majority of people only use one or two services, and if its obvious they will just click it. If they need to hover/wait/find-click/click more then find/click some don't bother.

The easiest answer is to ask your users which they prefer. Be sure, your trying to help them to help you. So talk to them

In all honesty, that might have happened ONE time on ONE page load over the past 9 months that has been up. Where the page was having a "wait" issue or wouldn't load fully issue.

It's not only never happened since that one time, and I am not even sure if it ever did happen once, or if I'm just fabricating this in my mind. Nonetheless it's extremely stable.

Aside from that, yes some people only use one or two services, but for bigger boards with thousands of members your idea is less practical. You'd have to poll people yearly to see which are the top systems they use and modify your post bit and other sections because of this. While using that button I put up eliminates all of that work, and covers all the bases at once.

It's convenience and greater usability override the highly remote chance of problems.

My friend put it in the Postbit template I'm pretty sure. Or Postbit legacy, or both. I know it's the postbit area though.

As far as every thread, of all the things we modified on our site, I don't think we ever changed Showthread template, and that is my guess, as I'd put it next to the post reply buttons if you were going to do it that way.

Someone will have to clarify this for you, but I'm pretty sure its'
SHOWTHREAD template.

Actually, I use delicious for personal bookmarking, but I never use links on a page to bookmark, I just hit Ctrl + D :)
