So who is recording their shows (either outside soundseeing or whole shows) on an iRiver?
I have a good reason for asking...:)
For mics, I use a couple of them and they both work well on all my equipment (iriver, nomad, Sony DAT).
Audio Technica ATR35s Lavalier Condenser (very small and <$40)
Sure AXS4 - older wired hand-held condenser
I am currently looking into wireless bodypack mics. See thread in Hardware section.

I just corrected my previous post regarding mics...it's the Plantronics .audio 70 I'm using, not the 60. Same quality mic, different headset style.

I'm doing the iRiver thing too and just retired my minidisc. My latest podcast is completely iRiver field recordings. I cut up and rearranged some of my field recordings to make a sound collage podcast.
iRiver is really benefiting from podcasting, but the device rocks, so what the hell.

The setup is great, and noise free (though there is plenty of room noise where I record)....
I think i'm gonna get one of those mini mics that Craig mentioned...
the iRiver rocks. i just got on and have been testing the mobile rig and soundseeing with it. FANTASTIC. I should have a soundseeing tour up pretty soon of The Saint Louis Zoo. It'll be my first official iRiver recording but many others are sure to follow.
anyone had a sporadic ticking or buzzing noise when they record?
Is it a specific pattern that almost sounds like morse code? I get that from time to time when driving. It appears to be related to cell phone towers.

I only had a bit of a buzz when some stress was put on the mic jack going into the iRiver. Not a problem w/the iRiver, though. After a few more days of recording with mine, I'm still very happy with it. Won't be recording to minidisc anytime soon.

I've been playing with the iRiver this afternoon and I am very impressed with the sound. Very clean. Very crisp and it picks up everything. I can't wait for the weather to get a little bit nicer so I can get out there and start recording some soundscapes. :)
Oh ya baby!
we use 2 iRivers to record our soundseeing stuff... it is a little overkill but it works well. iRiver has made a really good product and it works well for us.

:-(
It's like a tick-tick-ticking of a clock - the morse code interference I get from my phone but I just keep them apart and it's OK.
No I also get sporadic interference where it's on/off hiss - I can cope with constant hiss but this is like sporadic, like it was gated. Sometimes changing the battery solves it, and not having the backlight on - guess what the backlight causes interference!
I suspect it's my harddrive - seems to sync with the 'on' light - but why is that interfering with the iRiver?
I am using an iRiver H320 and two small mics - the Sony ECM-DS70P and Arts Technica AT9842 and have done some soundseeing stuff on the train or in peace rallies. :)

I've had that when the battery was low.

Never experienced that before.

Could be some weird type of radio interference. Have you tried using a longer cable to the iRiver and getting more distance between it and your computer?

I'm using 3 different mics with my iRiver iFP-795 right now:
1. Sony ECM-MS907 handheld battery-powered stereo condenser mic. Around $75. Great mic. Check it out in the 2/10 edition of "Behind the Scenes".
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00001W0DT/002-2174201-7062449?v=glance
2. Plantronics .audio 70 noise-cancelling headset mic. Around $20. Works really well for recording in the car. Check it out in the 1/24 edition of "Behind the Scenes"..

3. Giant Squid Audio Labs omnidirectional stereo lavalier microphones. $55. Pefect for soundseeing tours AND for interviews since the two mic elements are separated by 10' of lightweight cable. Check it out in the 2/24 edition of "Behind the Scenes".

Another cool one you may want to consider: The Reactive Sounds Recorder Mic. $25 turns your iRiver into a high-quality handheld recorder for the ultimate in portability:

I soon will be irivering thanks to Camillian and Craig. Man, I must have read your posts in the Hardware forum a dozen times trying to make out what is the best set up. I ended up with an iFP-895 and a Sony ECM-MS907 for remote stuff. Haven't even opened up the boxes yet! :D
I am using the iriver
