    Hi Everyone,

    I run a forum with 27,000 users. We recently upgraded from Fedora
    1 to Fedora 6 (and our VBulletin to 3.6.4) and started to have problems. We have tried recently CentOS 4.3. Under Fedora 1, everything ran perfectly, but now things are much different.

    The forums will run smoothly for periods of time then suddenly become
    busy. During this time he server will exceed a load of 10, 40 even 85+

    Currently the system is a dual core 64 bit 3 Ghz Xeon processor with 1
    gig of RAM.

    We've tried turning on and turning off options such as keep alive and
    persistent connections. We've tried several different Mysql
    optimizations, still, to no avail.

    We are running:

    Apache: 2.0.52
    Mysql: 4.1.20-log
    PHP: 4.3.9
    VBulletin 3.6.4
    on linux kernel: 2.6.9-42.0.8.ELsmp #1 SMP

    Disks are 15k SCSI in a RAID 5 using the MegaRAID_mbox driver for the
    LSI Logic / Symbios Logic MegaRAID (rev 02) controller

    This is a dedicated box. No other v-hosts or services are running

    Full information below:

    1. Is this on dedicated or shared virual server. If shared, how many

    3. what version of vB are you running ? 3.6.4

    4. if you use mysql 4.x instead of mysql 3.23.x, do you have any innodb
    type databases/tables on your server ? No

    5. if possible how mysql was compiled/installed: RPM

    6. your top stats

  • FC3 and above(which includes Centos 4.x since it's a stable fc3 branch) have weird apache load issues. While i am not seeing them there are too many reports of high loads with RH kernels for it to not exist.

  • Any help would really be appreciated :)

  • Thank you Eva and hescominsoon. All applied, and no difference. Server starts off fine, then loads up quickly and goes down. We tried different servers - everything it seems. I don't know what else to do.

  • at peak loads repost output for these 2 commands

    top

    mysqladmin -u root -p var ext ver > stats.txt

    open the stats.txt file to copy and paste it's contents.

  • There's a new kernel out for Centos.

    simpy run yum update and that should install the new kernel then reboot for it to take effect.

    I am really curious if switching to first the new kernel above AND using the worker mpm would help him instead of prefork?

  • Try the following in this exact order. You can ignore any of the suggestions that you have already done.

    1. Upgrade MySQL server to 4.1.22
    2. Upgrade PHP to 4.4.4 and/or recompile PHP 4.4.4 after upgrading MySQL
    3. Edit /etc/my.cnf and place the following mysql server settings in /etc/my.cnf and restart mysql server afterwards

    [mysqld]
    datadir=/var/lib/mysql
    socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
    safe-show-database
    old_passwords
    back_log = 75
    skip-innodb
    max_connections = 500
    key_buffer = 32M
    myisam_sort_buffer_size = 64M
    join_buffer_size = 1M
    read_buffer_size = 1M
    sort_buffer_size = 2M
    table_cache = 1800
    thread_cache_size = 384
    wait_timeout = 35

    [mysql.server]
    user=mysql

    [mysqld_safe]
    err-log=/var/log/mysqld.log
    pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid

    4. Install APC Cache lastest version from http://pecl.php.net/package/APC.

    5. If you just upgraded to vB 3.5.x/3.6.x try to disable these 4 options:

    Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Forums Home Page Options -> Display Logged in Users?

    Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Forum Display Options (forumdisplay) -> Show Users Browsing Forums

    Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Thread Display Options -> Show Users Browsing Thread

    Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Message Searching Options -> Automatic Similar Thread search

    6. Edit httpd.conf values from

    KeepAlive On
    MaxKeepAliveRequests 100
    KeepAliveTimeout 15
    StartServers 8
    MinSpareServers 5
    MaxSpareServers 20
    ServerLimit 256
    MaxClients 256
    MaxRequestsPerChild 4000

    to

    KeepAlive On
    MaxKeepAliveRequests 100
    KeepAliveTimeout 5
    StartServers 10
    MinSpareServers 10
    MaxSpareServers 15
    ServerLimit 256
    MaxClients 150
    MaxRequestsPerChild 1000

    7. If you're using CentOS 4.x linxu operating system, then read http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=171071 about 2.6.9-42.0.3 and possible 2.6.9-42.0.8 issues and maybe need to downgrade smp kernel to 2.6.9.42.02 or change swap settings
