We are having a strange problem, and its been happening for a few months now. The strange thing about it is it can happen once then not happen for weeks. Then some days it can happen 5 times.
I have submitted a support ticket but I got the standard have you shut off your plugins and reverted your templates routiene from Steve. :) He then suggested I post here
The problem is my server load runs normally below 1.00 (Normally around .070) however every once in awhile the server load goes through the roof. to 38.65 or HIGHER and there is no rhyme or reason for it. The only way to get it back down is to restart MySQL.

I have tried shutting off my plugins and using the default skin and but problem happened again a few moments after. And I believe it may be something that a user is doing which is causing the issue. As I have dumped the database and then put that database and a clone of the site online, and when the problem happens its always the one people are using, it never happens on the beta site.
I thought this problem could be a cpanel problem, however they have looked at it and tell me its a vBulletin issue. When the problem happens they have been having dump the process list via mysqladmin (mysqladmin processlist) and I have been saving these logs which you can see at http://www.satelliteguys.us/proc

It will happen, we restart MySQL and all is good, sometimes for days or weeks and then BOOM it happens. I should also note it only happens between 8am and 2pm eastern time, it has never happened earlier or later than that.
I have checked my cron jobs and nothing is scheduled to run at those times, and my normal processes are set to run in vbilletin.

Cat cpuinfo is not working for me.
I do hope that someone can help me figure out whats going on. It is really annoying to have a server that going with a load from 0.42 to jump 34.20 in just a matter of seconds. I have tried in the past letting this process run but killed it after an hour. I dont know what it is.

Okay I'm just commenting on what I see in the order I see it
1. Seems you do have some table locking issues related to subscription updates and other common mysql queries on busy vBs - which is common issue for MySQL. Maybe you have alot of users with subscribed email or new post subscriptions ? Does your default vB registration set subscribe to new post set to instant notification etc or No subscribe ? MySQL table locking is unavoidable and only thing you can do is take steps to reduce the duration and impact mysql table locks have when they occur.
2. Other locking queries related to avatars - make sure you move attachments and avatars to filesystem and not database
3. Slow SATA disks may worsen the table locking issues. Fast SCSI 15,000 rpm disks in raid 10 would help somewhat lessen the duration of the table locking
4. You have PHPAdsnew ensure persistent connections are disabled - same goes for vB config.php ensure pconnect = 0
5. Ensure vB admincp gzip is disabled since you already have Apache with mod_gzip which does the same thing
Try the following in this exact order. You can ignore any of the suggestions that you have already done.
1. Upgrade MySQL server to 4.1.22
2. Upgrade PHP to 4.4.4 and/or recompile PHP 4.4.4 after upgrading MySQL
3. Edit /etc/my.cnf and place the following mysql server settings in /etc/my.cnf and restart mysql server afterwards

Try disabling "email functions" in your admin control panel.
Ok last night I changed my setting and moved from php mail from vbulletin to SMTP mail.
Unfortunately this did not help anything and my server crashed twice with the same issue.
Before I restarted things I took some snapshots of what was going on

I just did that although I dont know if I can keep it off as the following features on my site are used often by the members

New Post Notifications to Members
In my settings I have the following:
mailqueue system set to yes with locking
number of emails to send per batch set to 5 (should this be turned up?)
For Enable "-f" Parameter I have it set to yes.
I am not using SMTP for sending mail. Should I change this?
