  • After surgery, the rabbit may become timid and she may tend to back out in corners of her cage or the part of the house. She may not eat for a while. For now,do not bother her.Leave her alone after the surgery.

After surgery, give her something to chew on to prevent a shut down of her digestive track.A cardboard or a chew toy would help a lot.If she really won't eat, then I suggest you much up a mush of rabbit pellets (1 part pellets, 2 parts water, run through blender thoroughly, add acidophilus, and feed in pea-sized bits with a feeding syringe through the side of the mouth).

Other than that,no special treatments must be given.Treat her as you normally does.

  • As a rescue rabbit carer, I've had a lot of spayed (and neutered) rabbits to care for. I've never had a problem with any. The females obviously go through the most, because of the nature of the surgery, but they all seem to be pretty perky after the first day-day and a half. Just make sure you give her some really appetising food to eat for the first couple of days to make sure she gets something in her tummy. And keep her inside, even if you don't usually, as the anaesthetic can impair their body's temperature control for a day or two.

I always ask my vet to include some pain relief as part of the procedure (this is an injection I think that seems to last about a day). That's about all there is to it. Obviously, you need to keep watch for signs of bleeding or of excessive pain, but normally they'll just be a bit wonky on their feet for a day, a bit quiet for another day, then start getting back to normal. Try to handle her as little as possible for the first week at least- only picking her up when you really need to.
Many of my females remove their own stitches, and seem to do this after the healing has begun, so i've never had an issue with open wounds or infection. If you notice any discharges or fresh blood though, more than 24 hours after surgery, call your vet.
Good luck - hopefully it'll calm her down a bit. Don't expect the effects to take place immediately. It can take a few weeks.
