Picking out a monologue for theater audition!.....urgent :o?

Published by: wktd 2010-03-16

  • Okay, so I'm auditioning for my school play of 'Zombie Prom' auditions are December 12th. I need to find a good monologue! I've never auditioned before, so help with picking out a good type of monologue and auditioning tips would be awesome!

Also, the director of the play isnt having us audition for specific parts - he just has us use a monologue and he'll pick parts for us individually.

  • First, it is important to keep in mind that Zombie Prom is a comedy. Make sure any monologue that you do end up performing keeps this same upbeat feel to it. If you know the play, and have a few specific characters in mind that you would like to play, performing the monologue in the style of that character will give your director some insight that you are capable of playing that part. I'm sure the school drama teacher has a few monologue books laying around, but if not the library always does. Once you get your hands on one, the next step is just reading until you find one you feel is right. If libraries aren't your thing, get online and search, but I will warn you that the online monologues are not nearly as good as the book monologues. Keep your monologue between 1-2 minutes, unless otherwise specified.

Now PRACTICE! Nothing alleviates nerves like feeling prepared. Practice in front of a mirror and have every line memorized. Work on making the character believable. Use arm motions when it seems right, and memorize your movement. Basic acting class has an actor identify the goal, obstacle, tactic, and expectation of your character. If you can do this, you have a working knowledge characterization. TIP: DO NOT USE AN ACCENT DURING THE AUDITION. USE YOUR NORMAL VOICE!

Now for the audition. Enter the audition room and state your name and the title of your monologue if you have one. When you feel it is time for you to begin, or when the director tells you to begin, quickly get into character and do what you practiced! When auditioning it is important not to look right at the director and any other people judging you, its just a common courtesy. Best bet is to look slightly above their head to an imaginary person that your character is talking to. Keep your focus and speak clearly and slowly, so that every word can be understood. Make sure your voice has a presence, you want it to fill the room. If you mess up DO NOT STOP OR ASK TO START OVER! Just get through the whole thing as professionally as possible. A good stage actor can cover their mistakes so that the director cannot even tell. At the end of your monologue, pause for about two seconds of silence to give your audience time to absorb your performance, and then simply say "thank you." And that is it!

Good Luck! Hope this helped. I left an online monologue site link below.

  • Hmm...I suppose you could use Anne's monologue to Peter in 'The Diary of Anne Frank.' It's a softer monologue, but it's still nice. I used that one and got into acting class :D Someone in my acting class recently did Ms. Brodie's monologue to the headmistress in 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.' It was amazing, the character was so full of emotion. If I could choose a monologue to do, it would probably be that one.

If you have any favorite plays, look through the script for monologues- there's bound to be one or two. Also, make sure you can put strong emotion into your monologue and that you really like it, or you won't be motivated to work on it. Directors also like for you to be comfortable on stage and make your monologue realistic too, so move around! If they've set up a chair or something, use it! Oh, and KNOW THE MONOLOGUE! This sounds really obvious, but it happens- you blow it off for a bit because of school and what not, and then comes audition day and you're shaking onstage trying to remember a few redeeming lines. (That just happened to me lol)

    Anyways, I hop I helped a bit :]]
    Break a leg!
