I don't remember which one our town has, I think we have both. But, are dogs up for adoption in those stores? I haven't been to them in years. I read somewhere else about special adoption days or something. I was thinking about buying one from Petland but I found out about puppy mills... Some of them look so nice and I just came back from Petland and saw a really aggressive golden retriever and calm rottweiler. Aren't golden retrievers supposed to be calm and rottweilers aggressive?
Anyways, back to the point. How can I find an animal shelter near where I live?(I live in Joplin, Missouri, and it can't be too far of a drive)
And, do Petsmart and Petco sell/put up dogs for adoption? Are there the adoption days or whatever? Thanks for reading
I would recommend going to petfinder.com or your local humane society. Most of the dogs that are the Petco (at least in my area) are all ready in a foster home. There are a lot of pets that will be put down in shelters if they do not find a good home soon. Please just take a look at this site and see if you like any of the breeds on there. Most Petcos and Petsmarts sponsor adoption adoption days held by local shelters. Call your local stores to find out when those days are. Petco and Petsmart are supportive of dog adoption and do not get any profits from these events. It's a perfectly find way to find a dog.
You can also look for local shelters at www.petfinder.com.
And you are absolutely right about Petland. Avoid.
The majority of Petsmart and Petco locations have a local shelter bring a few dogs into the stores on Saturday/Sunday.
Call your local store to find out the exact details.
There is the Joplin Humane Society- 4400 Swede Lane is the address.
I'm sure you can find other local shelters by doing a search on the Yahoo! Homepage.
above answer is great
I thought that Petland turned into Petco??? At least did here, and now no more petcos.. only petsmart.
Normally you can't buy dogs from petstores anymore..thankfully. But yes they sometimes hold adoption days thru your local no kill shelters. Ours showcases animals that are in foster homes.
animal services/control or the (IN)Humane Society do have paperwork that has to be filled out . LIke if you live in an apt and want a large dog, they generally won't adopt a large dog out to you.
I own a golden right now and is a PERFECT dog w/my young kids... Several yrs ago I owned 2 female rotties and they too were perfect, lazy, laid back and most loving dogs I've ever had... :) All of the dogs were good 'watch' dogs that would bark or growl if someone came to door late at night, etc, but none were agressive toward anyone.
