I found a completely hairless area on my guinea pig, Casper. I'm sure he has the mites, because he jumps a lot when I pet him. Will this move onto the other guinea pigs? How can I treat Casper in the meantime before visiting the vet?
For most cases of mites in small animals,Ivermectin is administered.Moxidectin is also effective. It can be given through injections, topical or oral treatment.Diazepam can help control itching.Selamectin, according to some owners and vets, are one of the best medicines too for mites.
All of these treatments must be given by an exotics vet.Exact amounts must be given. Not too much yet at the same time not too low.Avoid using over-the counter drugs from pet stores as they are usually not effective,They might even worsen the condition.

For now,you could try your own treatment.Cut the nails back to minimize further damage from scratching.Clean the environment as to prevent mites infestation again after treatment.

If Caspar does have mites, they can easilly spread to your other guinea pigs. Your vet can easilly diagnose & treat the problem, I hope you can take Caspar there in the morning.
