Must you thaw a pre-cooked turkey for 2 days before heating and serving?
Published by: mike 2010-03-11
  • We are heating and serving a pre-cooked turkey that was frozen. The directions suggest that we thaw it for 2 days in a fridge before serving.... but we need it done tonight.

If I lay it in a sink full of hot water for 30 mins, should that do the trick?

  • What does the package say? I would just keep doing what your doing. Hot water... Although I don't know if the middle will get fully thawed.

  • is it in shrink vacuum packaging? If so, I should think that you would be able to do it for tonight.

But if it is precooked, and NOT in shrink vacuum packaging, i wouldn't thaw it in water -- it would rinse away all of the seasoning and make the skin flabby and soggy. ICK!

Although you should not thaw in HOT water, Food Safety requirements suggest cool water in a sink, or pot, with a continuous source of water dripping into it to change the water. I would say that would take an hour or two.

I have done a turkey in a small picnic cooler placed in my bathtub overnight under a dripping faucet.

    Good Luck!

  • Here are the best ways to thaw anything.

    - in a sink with cold running water
    - in a cold water bath (changing the water every now and then)
    - in the refrigerator

any other ways and you risk bacteria multiplying, and you don't want anyone getting sick.

Oh, and in case you really have no experience, have it wrapped. If you bought it from the store, leave it in the plastic covering.

  • It might, but you have a very big chance of also wearing a hole in the floor getting to the bathroom later ( are ya feeling me?)

    NOT SAFE!

  • Never. Did you get that? NEVER thaw -any-thing in hot water. It is not safe at all. You always thaw in cold water. It is the quickest, safest method.

Thawing in hot water will bring the surface up into the temperature danger zone for far too long whilst you're stuck trying to thaw the frozen middle.

Thawing in cold water allows the turkey to stay at a low temperature whilst the rest thaws out. You want to put it in your sink and fill it with water as cold as your tap will go, changing the water every thirty minutes. Depending on the size, it will take a couple hours, more or less, to thaw the turkey.
