Is Racism/Xenophobia a natural reaction...?

Published by: admin 2010-03-13

  • and before you all start likening me to the KKK I dont consider myself 'racist' but I have lived in a number of countries around the world( a couple in Africa, South Asia, & Europe) & found most people to be suspicious or openly hostile to foreigners. Many fear to express their opinions & in some parts of the world( the EU as an example) are forbidden to by law. Yet these beliefs are there..so my question is: are we all racists on some level, & if so then why force people together who would sooner be apart?

  • Just for information because you don't consider yourself racist doesn't mean that your not racist - I am sure that Hitler didn't think of himself as a genocidal murderer but that's what he was.

  • good point...I noticed the same thing..these idiots are creating a steam bomb

  • No, I don't believe those are natural reactions but are definitely learned behavior--so is bigotry. Even when no words are spoken, children pick up reactions and behavior from parents or other role models. It is learned gradually and reinforced when they associate with peers who have learned the same behavior/reactions.

Babies and young children can be put into a strange atmosphere with people of different races, ethnicities, cultures, nationalities and they can thrive.

(Prime Examples: Children whose adoptive parents are of a different race, ethnicity, etc. Another would be children who have only been exposed to family and members of their own race who enter nursery school or day care and caregivers/teachers are of another race--the children bond with, love and trust them.)

Having selective and/or limited exposure to and interaction people who are different than oneself is NOT enough time to get to know those people or form any type of bond that would lead to trust.

I am a black female from the United States and have lived outside of my culture. I lived in an area of the Netherlands where there were very few people of color. The people treated me as I treated them and visa versa. It was same when I lived in the Caribbean. Generally, I find that respect and trust are both earned and extended.

In addition, I began my work experience in the early 70's which was a time in the US where not many blacks were working in executive and/or legal offices. Most of the time, I was the only black secretary not only in the office but usually in the entire building. Many people exhibited some reservations about me (and my competence). That was not natural but learned behavior brought on by racist mentality. Generally, after people had worked with me and GOTTEN TO KNOW ME things changed drastically. (Of course, there were exceptions.)

Yes, beliefs are there on all sides, from all races and ethnicities and cultures; however, those beliefs don't have to remain. It's up to individuals to change things within their own lives, families and places of employment. No law can change a mindset--only people can do that.

We are only racists (on ANY level) if we CHOOSE to be and/or remain so.

(I don't know your experience with severe racism. I've known it up close and personal from several angles. I was brought up prior to the Civil Rights Movement in the US. I consider racism to be based on ignorance. Not stupidity but ignorance of the facts about other people. I also experienced extreme xenophobia post 9-11. Again, ignorance was the culprit.)

Apart? This world is growing smaller and people are assimilating (in case some haven't been noticing these past several decades). Besides, with air travel and the use of the internet, we will never be "apart" again.

    Blessings.

  • No!!

  • yes as the natural human reaction to the unknown is fear which is what racism / xenophobia is.Once the fear is conquered then the racism generally goes away.

  • I don't understand why people think this is racist. Most people have a fear of the unknown and meeting people in another country is part of facing the unknown. You don't always know their religious beliefs, their customs, their political views, on and on. Why do people insist that it's always about color? It's like starting a new job or going to a party with people you don't know. People wonder how they will be received and I believe that is a natural reaction, not a racist reaction.

  • It's a normal human reaction i think, maybe it is deep rooted in our past because when we were all in tribes then anyone who was from outside was a threat. liberals are creating a social experiment.

  • I think it's a natural reaction to be suspicious or weary around people who don't look like you. But it's not natural to outright hate them or believe they are somehow inferior to you. That is a learned behavior.

  • I think we all have prejudice, but also note that prejudice is not always true. And because stereotypes about certain races and nationalities are not always true, they really should not have any place in our society.

You may feel forced to be around other people for no other reason than their race/nationality, but not all of us do. I could understand what you say if someone was just unpleasant, but not because of where they're from.

So, I guess I'm saying that they're only forced to be together because they're in the minority--sorry. You are too.

  • Yes dislike and mistrust of unknown people/cultures is a perfectly normal human reaction
